Newcastle’s homeowners ‘to debate’ under-fire boss Eddie Howe’s future after depressing type

JEREMY CROSS COLUMN: Newcastle United’s owners are said to be meeting with Eddie Howe to discuss the under-fire manager’s position after a miserable season

Newcastle United’s Saudi owners are said to be meeting with Eddie Howe this coming week to discuss his future.

Howe has been under increasing pressure following a disappointing season. But the fact some supporters want Howe sacked beggars belief. How fickle can some people be?

Have these people conveniently forgotten Howe has led Newcastle into the Champions League twice. Oh, he also won the Carabao Cup last season – the club’s first major trophy since 1969. Yes, it’s true this campaign has not been a successful.

But Newcastle still reached the Carabao Cup semi finals and last 16 of the Champions League.

It’s fair to say Howe is allowed a poor season, because he still has credit in the bank. But football doesn’t tend to work like that, does it.

GOOD WEEK

Matt Fitzpatrick – The Englishman can’t stop winning, racking up the prize money and rising up the world rankings.

Having beaten Rory McIlroy in a play-off to win the DP World Tour Championship at the end of last season, he did the same to Scottie Scheffler to claim the RBC Heritage in Carolina, his second win on the PGA Tour in five weeks. He’s now ranked the third best golfer in the world.

Harry Kane – The England captain has just won his second Bundesliga title on the spin with Bayern Munich. Having waited his whole career to win a major honour, he’s now landed two in the space of 12 months.

And to think, Jamie Redknapp thought Kane leaving Tottenham to join Bayern was a mistake!

BAD WEEK

Jack Draper – The bad news just keeps on coming for the British tennis star. Draper withdrew from this week’s Madrid Open and he will also miss next month’s Italian Open because of a knee tendon injury.

The 24-year-old did not play in the Monte Carlo Masters either, and retired from his only clay court match of the season in Barcelona, as a result of the problem.

Karen Brady – Most West Ham fans will be celebrating. But from a personal perspective, having to step down from her position as vice chair of the club because of years of abuse and criticism from those same supporters, is a sad indictment of how low the Hammers have sunk. Not least when the club is battling to beat relegation, with just five games of the season remaining.
