‘This garden mower modified my opinion on the cordless debate – and I’ll by no means return’

Spring has sprung, meaning it’s the perfect time to get your garden in order to enjoy the warmer weather – with one gadget sure to elevate it at an affordable price

The success and usability of a new garden gadget starts from the very first moment. And by that, I don’t mean when it touches the grass, but rather the moment it arrives at your door.

And my Gtech Cordless Lawnmower CLM50 passed the test from the moment the friendly delivery driver passed the surprisingly lightweight package over. When opening the cardboard box, the mower arrived with just the essentials. To me, this is a blessing due to my pure hatred of assembling tedious nuts and bolts.

My delight did not disappear after I realised the assembly would be completely smooth. Essentially, I had to move the handle into place with a couple of height settings available. After rotating the locking handles and attaching the grass box, I was ready to go.

Just one of the things that attracted me to this model was the fact the mower had a foldable design. Perfect for compact storage, it’s great for any less-than spacious sheds. Adding to this, the mower has a generous 420mm cutting width. It’s powered by a 48V lithium-ion battery and has a collapsible 50-litre bin for grass cuttings.

To cord or not to cord has been a longstanding debate with garden tech – but when the Gtech battery only takes an hour to power up, I think the verdict is pretty clear.

Now if there’s one thing I require with lawn mowers, it’s the ease. While I can get around a garden with little to no bother, adding a clunky machine into the mix can cause a whole range of issues.

But with the Gtech CLM50, there’s no need to worry. I mowed up and down my lawn at a walking pace, and the machine did a great job. I completed the entire thing in 10 minutes and didn’t have to retrace my steps for any missed patches.

Before I began, I had to turn the safety key to the unlocked position. Gtech are very clear on the importance of this safety feature. After that, all you’re required to do is push the button on the side of the handle while pulling the thinner green lever on the top handle bar towards the thicker grey bar.

With little to no effort, the mower took off and did its job perfectly. Made for small to medium gardens, it was easy enough to get into most of the corners, minus a few tight turns due to the wheels on the side. Though this is common with the vast majority of models on the market.

My favourite feature was the adjustable cutting height feature. A simple handle on the side allowed you to move it from 30mm to 80mm. I chose 60 at first, but have been altering since.

Very helpfully, the Gtech also tells you how much charge you have left with a light on the battery. My first mowing session took just under 15 minutes and three green lights were still visible.

According to the brand, one-hour charge provides up to 40 minutes of cutting time – which sounds correct.

If you’re into technicalities, the CLM50 includes Omniblade Cutting Technology. Gtech says this is “intelligent” as the blade rotates faster – around 3500RPM ahead of the usual 2800RPM – whenever it senses that extra power is required.

Overall, the Gtech CLM50 provided great cutting power, easy use and a smooth journey. Disposing of the grass after use is also simple with a fabric base.

Perfect for spring and summer garden parties, Gtech is enough to convert any diehard corded mower fans.
