With an estimated 60,000 prostitutes, Pattaya is the world’s number one sex tourist destination – but Thailand’s police are trying to clean up the resort’s reputation

• Thai cops are desperately cracking down on sex tourism in Pattaya as they battle to clean up the notorious resort’s seedy reputation.
• Dubbed the “porn version of Disneyland”, the Sin City boasts around 60,000 sex workers and hundreds of go-go bars, massage parlours and brothels. Police recently swooped on popular tourist areas, nicking 16 sex workers and revoking their visas.
• Despite the crackdown, Pattaya shows little sign of shaking off its reputation as the world’s biggest brothel. Punters can hire women for as little as a tenner, with many available “long time” to spend entire holidays pretending to be girlfriends.
• Many British tourists and expats flock to the resort, with former car worker Stephen Webster, 53, saying: “Once I saw the lifestyle in Pattaya there was no going back.” Retired builder Graham Baldwin, 66, from Norfolk, added: “Thailand is more relaxed and less stressful than the UK.”
• But the dark side includes tourists being drugged and robbed, with one losing £1,150 cash and a £16,000 Rolex. The city also has the grim “Pattaya Flying Club” – foreigners who take their own lives by jumping from balconies.
• ASOS co-founder Quentin Griffith, 58, was the latest Brit to fall to his death in February after blowing £1,000 a night on champagne-fuelled parties with bar girls. The suicide rate among foreigners is five times the national average.
• YouTuber Trevor Knight warned: “When your dreams are shattered and your heart is broken, desperate times call for desperate measures.”
