Double-decker on hearth as bus destroyed in early morning rush hour chaos
Dramatic video shows the moment a First Glasgow double decker bus was engulfed in flames at a bus stop in Kirkintilloch. The bus was completely destroyed by the blaze.
An electric First Bus erupted into flames near Glasgow this morning causing chaos on the roads.
Firefighters were summoned to Merkland Drive in Kirkintilloch after the alert was raised just before 8am on Tuesday, April 28. The First Glasgow double-decker could be seen aflame at a bus stop on the street.
The front of the bus and the roof were consumed by fire, with a column of thick black smoke seen spiralling up into the sky. Firefighters were observed tackling the blaze as the bus driver stood nearby, looking on.
Subsequent photos taken after the fire was put out revealed the bus completely ravaged by the inferno.
The charred remains of the double-decker could be seen parked at the side of the road as it awaited recovery, reports the Daily Record.
The cause of the fire is currently unknown but it’s not believed anyone has been injured as a result.
The First Glasgow X87 service provides an express route from Merkland Drive in the town to Buchanan Bus Station in Glasgow city centre. Fire crews confirmed they promptly dispatched two appliances to the scene.
A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service stated: “We were alerted at 7.55am on Tuesday, April 28, to reports of a vehicle fire on Merkland Drive, Kirkintilloch. Two appliances were mobilised to the scene.”
First Bus and Police Scotland have been contacted for comment.
