Barcelona’s Marcus Rashford U-turn may block Man Utd’s £43m switch swoop

Marcus Rashford’s future at Manchester United is still unclear and fresh reports could have a knock on effect on the Reds’ transfer plans

Marcus Rashford could play a pivotal part in Manchester United’s summer transfer strategy but also potentially complicate a move for reported target Rafael Leao.

Rashford is on a season-long loan at Barcelona, with ongoing speculation surrounding whether a permanent arrangement will be finalised this summer. Rashford expressed his desire to depart United last summer, with the loan agreement at Barcelona including an option to make the switch permanent for a £26million fee.

Nevertheless, doubts persist over whether the La Liga heavyweights will opt to secure Rashford on a permanent basis, with Barca yet to formally initiate discussions with United regarding the England international’s future despite earlier claims this year that they were determined to complete the deal.

The possibility remains that Rashford could find himself back at United, despite the 28-year-old previously expressing his ambition to join Barcelona permanently.

United have the summer transfer market approaching, with numerous rumours still circulating about what activity the club might pursue before next season.

One area United have been linked with bolstering is the wide attacking position, with AC Milan ace Leao mentioned as a possible target.

Italian publication Calciomercato have claimed that United are amongst the contenders to sign Leao, who could be permitted to leave Milan if a suitable bid is submitted.

It has been suggested that Leao is priced at around €50million (£43m) and remains tied to the San Siro until the summer of 2028.

Nevertheless, Rashford’s situation at United could impact the Reds’ plans to bolster their squad, especially in the wide areas.

Leao and Rashford have operated in identical roles this season, down the left flank. Consequently, Rashford staying at United next term could mean the Reds see no necessity to enter the market to reinforce their left-wing position.

It appears improbable that Rashford will be brought back into the fold, but United are standing firm and declining to consider another temporary deal or a reduced bid from Barcelona.

Should Barcelona choose against making his move permanent, it could leave United in an awkward spot regarding Rashford’s future, considering his substantial salary and the fact he’s eager to remain with the Catalan club.

Recent days have witnessed additional clubs linked with summer approaches for Rashford, with Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa both reportedly showing interest.

United interim manager Michael Carrick was recently questioned about Rashford’s future and the possibility of the striker rejoining the squad for next season. “There’s decisions to be made on certain things, and obviously Marcus is in that situation,” Carrick stated earlier this month.

“But at this point in time, nothing’s been decided. It will be, because it has to be at a certain point, but at this stage, there’s nothing to say.”
