Salford college evacuated with pupils informed ‘go away their issues’ as police swarm
Parents of pupils dramatically evacuated from Oasis Academy MediaCityUK and sent home have spoken of how the school was swarmed by police as they were told to “leave their things”
Police have swarmed a UK school after it had been evacuated this morning (May 5) following concerns being made for the safety of pupils, according to reports.
Students have been sent home from Oasis Academy MediaCityUK, near Salford Quays this morning (May 5) as pupils were reportedly told to “leave their things”.
A message sent from the school to parents and carers said students were to remain at home for the rest of the school day, reports the Manchester Evening News.
Reports online suggest many children had been due to sit exams today. The message from the school to patents read: “Due to a health and safety site concern, we have made the decision to send all students home for the remainder of the day (May 5).
“If your child is due to sit an exam today this change will not impact their results. We will update you as soon as possible with confirmation of when school will reopen. Thank you for your understanding.”
Greater Manchester Police has now confirmed that the evacuation was sparked by ‘malicious communications’. The force added that this had reportedly been sent to a number of schools across the region and is now linked to an investigation.
A GMP spokesperson said: “We have received reports of malicious communications sent to a number of Greater Manchester schools, and our officers are investigating. We are approaching these reports with a standard response and treating it as one investigation.
“There is currently no credible evidence to suggest the threat is real. Officers are working to identify the person(s) responsible, and enquiries are ongoing.”
A resident living nearby told the M.E.N. her that her niece goes to the school and students were told to ‘leave their things’ and exit the building.
She said: “They went to school as normal and next thing they were in full lockdown, they were told to leave their things and to leave the building. Then told to go home. There are loads of rumours spreading about what might have happened.
“People are sitting their exams like my niece, but how can they do that after something like this?”My sister just rushed there, and there are other kids panicking who can’t get hold of their mum or dad. They just got a message saying the school is closed.”
The mum of one student told the M.E.N. that her son was among those evacuated and told her “two police vans were outside.”
