Car smashes into a number of folks in UK city market place as police swarm space
Police are investigating after a red Vauxhall Astra collided with multiple pedestrians in Arnold’s Market Place in the early hours of this morning, with one victim sustaining life-threatening injuries
An inquiry is in progress after a car ploughed into several pedestrians in Arnold.
The incident, involving a red Vauxhall Astra, occurred in Market Place at 1.12am today (May 9). Multiple individuals were hit by the vehicle, with one victim sustaining life-threatening injuries.
The car was deserted at the scene following the incident, with the driver subsequently fleeing on foot. Officers have identified a suspect – believed to be a white man – and are currently attempting to locate him. Detective Chief Inspector Ruby Burrow, of Nottinghamshire Police, stated: “There is no indication at this stage of any ongoing threat to the wider public. However, we understand the incident will cause concern in the community.
“Officers will remain at the scene today to carry out further inquiries, speak to local people and offer reassurance.
“It is also important anyone with information, or relevant dashcam, CCTV, doorbell or mobile phone footage, gets in touch without delay.”
Road closures have been implemented around Arnold town centre while police continue their investigation into the incident. Market Place and the junctions from Gedling Road to Derby Street, Hallams Lane and Central Avenue are cordoned off.
These closures will persist for some time, so drivers are advised to steer clear of the area, if possible. Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information relating to it is urged to share it with the police.
You can report this directly to the police by dialling 101 and quoting incident 46 of 9 May 2026. Alternatively, you can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
A number of businesses in Market Place fall within the police cordon. The following businesses are blocked off by police tape: Specsavers, Refresh Coffee, Master Barbers, Regenerate, Beauty Bees Salon, Taylor Hair, The Photo Expert, Ladies Fashion and Accessories, Royal Piri Piri, Sashas, The Works, First Class. The Methodist Church off Worrall Avenue is also within the cordon.
A police officer stationed in Market Place has had to turn several people away from the busy town centre. They said one woman was turned away from the scene after trying to pick up her wedding cake.
Kevin Wilson and his family told Nottinghamshire Live about how they may be forced to cancel their daughter’s 18th birthday party at Sasha’s. Kevin said: ”I got called this morning to say that we can’t get into set up. We haven’t been told anything. We might not be able to get in all day.
“Our food was supposed to come from a cafe in there as well. They said they needed to be in there for 12.30pm to prepare the food. If we can’t get in now when do we cancel? You can’t wait until the last minute for these things.”
The MP for Gedling urged people not to speculate. Labour MP Michael Payne said in a Facebook post: “I would urge everyone not to speculate on the circumstances surrounding this incident while this important police work continues.
“I have sought reassurances from Nottinghamshire Police regarding ongoing community safety in and around Arnold, and I will continue to liaise closely with police colleagues throughout the weekend.
“I know this will be upsetting and worrying news for many of us who call Arnold home. I will endeavour to keep the local community informed and updated as the investigation and police work progresses.”
