UK hotspot for fats jabs revealed as increasingly more Brits strive injections
Research found that those most likely people in the country to be on fat jabs were Geordies, where 107 in every 10,000 locals had signed up for the weight loss treatment
Geordies are the biggest fans of fat jabs, a study has found. Researchers analysed weight loss data from 500,000 folk on various medications used for weight loss from all around the UK from September 2023 to the beginning of this year.
They found that the half-million Brits have lost a staggering 4,200 tonnes in weight over the past two-and-half-years That’s equivalent to the weight of 21 blue whales, the heaviest creatures on planet Earth, with the heaviest ever tipping the scales at 200 tonnes.
Blue whales can reach almost 100ft long and are the largest animal ever known to have lived.
The study by online doctor ZAVA found, however, that those most likely to be on fat jabs were Geordies, where 107 in every 10,000 locals had signed up for the weight loss treatment.
Fergus Henshaw, 43, of Sunderland, said he’d gone from 18st to 14st in the past year after going on Mounjaro.
He said: “Two of my friends started on Mounjaro about six months before me, but they didn’t tell me how they were losing weight.
“They eventually admitted they were taking weight loss jabs, and that was all the encouragement I needed – it’s a life saver in my case as there is a history of obesity and heart disease in the family.”
A spokesman for ZAZA said: “With 107 patients per 10,000 people, the North East records the highest uptake in the UK.”
Dr Crystal Wyllie, GP at ZAVA, said that fat jabs were more popular in the north of the UK than the south, adding: “What’s striking in this dataset is the geographic pattern of uptake.
“Northern regions, particularly the North East and North West, are leading the way.”
She added: “These medications are increasingly becoming part of routine weight-management strategies in the UK.
“From a clinical perspective, we’re seeing more patients seeking support not just for weight loss, but for the intrusive ‘food noise’ that can make everyday life challenging.”
The study found that, on average, for every 10,000 Brits, 77 were on weight loss jabs, with the regional league table as follows; 1 – North East – 107 in every 10,000 2 – North West – 89 in every 10,000 3 – Scotland – 78 in every 10,000 4 – Yorkshire & Humber – 76 in every 10,000 5 – South East – 75 in every 10,000 6 – West Midlands – 72 in every 10,000 7 – East of England – 71 in every 10,000 8 – Wales – 70 in every 10,000 9 – East Midlands – 67 in every 10,000 10 – South West – 65 in every 10,000
