A blaze broke out a major football stadium today as the whole arena was forced to evacuate.

Smoke filled the pitch and arena at Sweden’s national team stadium as AIK hosted Djurgardens at the 50,000-capacity Strawberry Arena in Stockholm on Sunday. The visitors were leading 2-1 after a busy start to their Allsvenskan league clash.

However, with just 25 minutes on the clock, the referee stopped the match as players were told to head off the pitch because of the fire in the stands. It is unclear what caused the fire but it’s possible it was as a result of flares inside the ground. TV cameras cut to the drama as fans cleared out of the way as the flames rose up.

Huge clouds of smoke billowing from the fire across the pitch were seen in dramatic footage and pictures on social media. Emergency services swarmed to the scene and used hoses to control the fire. AIK’s head of security Henrik Koch confirmed the fire was put out without anyone hurt.

Koch said: “No injuries occurred and the fire was extinguished.”
