Brit stranded in Magaluf after lads’ vacation due to Lightning McQueen Crocs
Callum Richens, 24, from Bournemouth, slipped while wearing his Lightning McQueen Crocs at a villa, before suffering further disaster when food poisoning struck just as he was ready to fly back
A Brit found himself left behind on a lads’ holiday after a fractured eye socket and brain bruising stopped him from taking his flight home. Callum Richens’ getaway with his mates took a nightmarish turn when his reliable Crocs led to an accident.
The 24-year-old’s ‘Lightning McQueen’ footwear slipped on the marble flooring and sent him tumbling down a staircase. He has no memory of the tumble, only the chaos surrounding him when he regained consciousness.
“I don’t remember the fall at all,” Callum, from Bournemouth, told NeedToKnow. “I just remember waking up to everyone panicking around me. Me and the group were all having drinks when my Lightning McQueen Crocs caught the marble floor in the villa and sent me flying down the stairs.”
The logistics worker was celebrating with mates in Magaluf, Spain, when one of their evenings went drastically wrong. After the shocking tumble, Callum was finally taken to hospital following an agonising two-hour wait for the ambulance on May 4.
Two scans showed he had fractured his eye socket, sustained brain bruising and potentially damaged his neck. He needed six stitches and was placed on an IV drip while being unable to eat or drink before the scans.
He said: “I stayed in the hospital until Tuesday (5 May) afternoon. I was originally meant to fly home early Wednesday (6 May) morning, but the doctors advised against it.
“Instead, I booked myself into a hotel for a week to recover on my own.” Callum was abandoned by his friends and spent the subsequent days attempting to recover from his injury.
By May 9, he felt well enough to return home, arranging an 11am flight – but his holiday was about to take another unexpected twist.
He awoke in the early hours with severe food poisoning.
Callum recounted: “By Saturday I felt good enough to fly home, so I booked an 11am flight Then disaster struck again.
“I woke up in the middle of the night with food poisoning from the hotel and was being sick every hour from 2am until 6am. Somehow, I still dragged myself through the airport and made it home.
“My mate Josh picked me up from Bristol Airport and I went straight to the hospital for another check-up and scan.”
Thankfully, the brain bruising had healed and there were no longer any concerns regarding his neck injury.
