Footballer, 13, stabbed to demise after coaching as mum mourns her ‘cheerful boy’

A 13-year-old football prodigy has been tragically stabbed to death while walking home from training as his heartbroken mother paid tribute to her ‘cheerful boy’

A teenage footballer has been stabbed to death by a street gang after it was claimed he wandered into “the wrong place at the wrong time”.

Cristian Fabián Rondón Méndez was confronted by two men on a motorbike after training at a sports complex in Colombia at around 9.45pm on Saturday, May 16. The 13-year-old boy, who was described as a promising player with Club Sporting de Piedecuesta, had apparently crossed an ‘invisible border’ between neighbourhoods controlled by violent youth gangs.

One of the attackers allegedly told him: “You are not from this neighbourhood, you are from Suratoque,” before stabbing him in the chest with a knife and leaving him for dead.

The teen, who was with a friend at the time, was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. The attack took place near the Pobre Luis football pitch in the district of Villanueva in Piedecuesta City.

Witnesses said the assailants fled on their motorbike as locals tried to help the stricken teenager. His mother, Luz Mayerly Rendón, said her son was “a cheerful child with many dreams” whose world revolved around studying and football.

He dreamed of one day playing professionally for Colombian top-flight side América de Cali. Club Sporting de Piedecuesta expressed shock at Cristian’s untimely passing. His coach said he was full of “dreams and illusions”.

In a statement, the club said: “Cristian Fabian was part of the Sporting club of Piedecuesta, where he was recognised for his passion for football and his commitment on and off the pitch.

“His sudden departure and the very events leading up to his death have generated deep sorrow and indignation among family members, teammates, coaches and the department’s sports community at large.

The mayor’s office condemned the violence and activated full investigation protocols with the police and judicial authorities. They also offered a reward of up to £2,965 (COP 15m) for information leading to the killers’ capture, as reported by NeedToKnow.

No arrests have been made yet despite immediate police operations in the area. Residents said Villanueva has become a flashpoint where gangs intimidate outsiders and enforce unofficial territorial lines.

Cristian’s death marks the third underage child to be murdered by gangs fighting over territorial control in Piedecuesta since the start of 2026.
