Man Utd set for 4 main bulletins after Carrick everlasting deal agreed

Manchester United are set for a busy week of announcements after Michael Carrick secured a deal to remain as permanent manager, with decisions expected on his backroom

It could be a pivotal week of revelations at Manchester United following Michael Carrick’s agreement to stay on as permanent manager.

Carrick took the reins for the remainder of the season after Ruben Amorim’s departure in January and has overseen a marked upturn in form, with United securing Champions League football with three games to spare. Now that the managerial issue is settled, fans’ focus will likely turn to the summer transfer window, which could prove a busy period for United.

Despite significant strides under Carrick, it’s clear the squad needs bolstering if they’re to mount a title challenge next season. Beyond fresh recruits, there’s also the crucial task of finalising the coaching setup.

Carrick’s coaching team has included Steve Holland, Jonathan Woodgate, ex-United player Jonny Evans and goalkeeping coach Craig Mawson, all of whom could potentially stay on, reports the Mirror.

Holland spent 11 years as Sir Gareth Southgate’s right-hand man, initially with England Under-21s before moving up to the senior side. He’s been widely praised for his contributions as United’s number two.

Carrick stated: “Steve’s been fantastic. He’s got an awful lot of experience and seen pretty much everything before. He’s gone through it in some good times and in some more challenging times.

“He’s a very wise man, Steve, and says things that really are important at the right time. I think just general calmness and composure around for everyone. I think with all the staff, there’s the dynamics of bringing something a little bit different.”

Evans has been another vital figure in recent months. After retiring from playing, Evans took on the position of head of loans and pathways at Carrington, though the role proved short-lived as he stepped down in December, only to return to help Darren Fletcher during his caretaker period.

Carrick then retained him within his coaching structure, praising the Northern Irishman for his work on set-pieces. There are suggestions that a set-piece expert, such as former United coach Andreas Georgson, could be brought in to strengthen the team, though Evans is anticipated to remain.

Former Leeds and Real Madrid defender Woodgate was recruited, having previously served under Carrick at Middlesbrough. Carrick appreciates having Woodgate around because he “challenges and pushes” me.

Mawson, who initially joined United from Burnley in 2019, is the only coaching staff member left from Amorim’s era. He was promoted to senior goalkeeping coach following Carrick’s appointment and is expected to continue in that role. The destinies of all four could be determined soon. Elsewhere, the future role of Travis Binnion remains uncertain, following his promotion from the under-21s to work with the first team.
