A seven-month-old baby has been rushed to intensive care after an Almeria shooting near a popular Spanish coastal resort left two people dead and four others seriously injured, including two young children
Two people have been killed and four others including two youngsters left critically wounded in a shooting near a popular Spanish seaside resort.
Among the casualties is a seven-month-old boy who has been rushed to hospital’s intensive care ward. The tot is believed to be the alleged gunman’s son. Local media is also reporting that the two people killed were the alleged shooter’s parents.
The horrific attack occurred late Monday evening in El Canalillo between Balanegra and El Ejido in the south-eastern province of Almeria. The location sits close to Almerimar, a well-loved tourist hotspot on the Costa de Almeria renowned for its golden beaches and home to one of Andalucia’s biggest marinas.
The baby hurt in the gunfire is reportedly in a “very serious” state at Torrecardenas University Hospital, Almeria’s principal public medical facility, after being struck by bullets twice. The second child wounded, also receiving treatment in the same intensive care ward, is believed to be an 18-month-old girl.
Regional media reports indicate the youngsters’ mother was also harmed and has been transported to a different medical centre, Poniente University Hospital in El Ejido. A 60-year-old man is also believed to have been seriously injured after reportedly being shot in the head.
The shooter, thought to be connected to some of those targeted, surrendered to police and was arrested on Tuesday morning, according to El Pais. The 25-year-old has since been taken to hospital for a mental health evaluation, Ideal reported.
Emergency services were alerted to the shocking ordeal at 11.15pm, when the first two victims were found dead in a car, AS reported. Emergency services dispatched to the scene included officers from the Civil Guard’s specialist Rapid Response Group.
The Civil Guard has launched an investigation into the shooting.
