Woman in vital situation after shark assault – witness noticed ‘a number of blood’
A woman has been airlifted to hospital in a critical condition after a shark attack near the shore of a popular beach – a witness said there was “a lot of blood”
Several popular Australian beaches have been closed after a woman was bitten by a shark near the shore. She has been airlifted to hospital in a critical condition.
Authorities reported that emergency services were called to Coogee Beach, in Sydney just before 11.15am on Saturday, June 13 following reports of a swimmer being attacked by a shark.
The victim, thought to be in her 30s, has sustained severe injuries to her arm and leg, according to police.
A bystander told to Australian news outlet news.com.au how a lifeguard on a surfboard hurried over to assist the woman when cries for help were heard.
“I saw the shark’s fins,” the witness revealed.
“A swimmer was doing laps not far from shore. The lifeguard made an X symbol with his arms and the shark alarm sounded.”
The onlooker described seeing “a lot of blood” in the water and suggested the swimmer had been bitten on the torso.
New South Wales police confirmed the woman was hauled from the water by members of the public who began administering first aid before the arrival of emergency services.
Police then provided further first aid to the woman before she was airlifted to hospital by helicopter.
Nearby beaches, including Coogee, Clovelly and Bronte have since been shut down.
This incident follows a similar attack just months earlier, when a boy, 12, was mauled by a shark in Sydney.
Nico Antic was attacked by a shark in Sydney’s east on Sunday, January 18 and tragically passed away later that month.
Nico’s attack marked the first in a series of subsequent maulings that occurred in the days following his hospitalisation.
