Bonnie Tyler wakes up from coma after ‘struggling cardiac arrest’ as replace issued
Bonnie Tyler has reportedly woken up from an induced coma but the Welsh singer ‘remains seriously ill’ in a Portuguese hospital. The 75-year-old had only recently landed on a flight from the UK
Bonnie Tyler has woken up from a medically induced coma after she reportedly suffered a heart attack in Portugal. The British singer’s team issued an important update on the 75-year-old’s health.
A representative for Bonnie said: “Bonnie is no longer in a coma, but remains seriously ill.” The star is in intensive care in Faro, south Portugal.
Her doctors expect her to make a full recovery but she remains in serious condition. In April, the Welsh singer began feeling intense abdominal pain shortly after arriving in Portugal, where she has a second home. Bonnie was rushed to hospital with a serious tear in her bowel and required emergency surgery.
Complications with the surgery meant doctors had to place her in an induced coma.
Portuguese media reported Bonnie went into cardiac arrest when her doctors first tried to bring her out of induced coma. All of Bonnie’s planned concerts have been cancelled until the end of August.
Her management released a statement thanking the fans for their support. It said: “We would like to thank everyone for the tremendous sympathy and support from around the world.”
For several years, Bonnie has divided her time between Faro, Portugal, where she owns a property and South Wales. After falling in love with the Algarve while working on an album there, the singer decided to spend more time in the region.
Over the years, Bonnie has been candid about her health and recently admitted that her knees were her primary health concern, reports the Mirror. She said: “I’m still rocking on that stage with my wonderful band, and if you’ve got your health, you’ve got everything. I do home Pilates, only 20 minutes a day – it’s something I can do in my hotel rooms.”
“I have had problems with my knees; I didn’t have new knees, I had what they call washouts [a surgical knee procedure], which turned out to be very successful. So, hopefully that will last for a long time.”
Last year, Bonnie revealed to The Mirror that she had no intention of retiring. Although she has “slowed down”, she’s not ready to hang up her microphone for good – and hopes to continue touring for many more years.
“I started singing when I was 17 and I never thought I’d still be doing it at this age. I’ve slowed down a little bit, but I know now that I will never retire,” she explained.
“Even though I was so lucky because I was in Portugal when the first lockdown was announced, by the end of it, I’d had enough. I was going crazy. I needed to get back out there on the road!”
