Man Utd information: Red Devils ‘agree phrases’ with £80m star as Prem rivals eye Rashford swoop

Manchester United have reportedly made significant progress in their pursuit of an £80million-rated Premier League star, while Marcus Rashford’s future remains uncertain

The World Cup may be the talk of the football world this summer, but Manchester United are not allowing it to disrupt their business. That is clear given the latest flurry of updates hinting at activity both incoming and outgoing at Old Trafford.

Michael Carrick’s team are already zeroing in on their first significant signing, with Ederson nearing the completion of his £39million transfer. However, whispers suggest United have made substantial headway in their chase for another star midfielder.

The World Cup has somewhat muddled matters regarding the progress United can expect while certain stars are preoccupied. Nonetheless, the club hasn’t been idle, as the Daily Star Sport rounds up Tuesday’s most significant United transfer headlines.

In a development eagerly awaited by many at the Theatre of Dreams, Mateus Fernandes has reportedly agreed terms with United. Recent rumours have indicated that the Red Devils are leading the race for the Portugal international, with Tottenham also believed to be keen.

Now comes the minor detail of settling on a fee with West Ham, who are reportedly demanding upwards of £80m for the player. However, United are said to be reluctant to approach that figure.

According to talkSPORT, Fernandes is satisfied with the package being put forward by United following West Ham’s drop from the Premier League. Should those reports ring true, the 21-year-old has essentially approved a switch to United and is prepared to allow both clubs to hammer out the details.

While United may have been quickest off the mark, that urgency could count for nothing unless they can satisfy West Ham’s demands. New Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho is also believed to admire Fernandes, although Los Blancos have already splashed significant cash this summer.

Fernandes now boasts two campaigns of Premier League knowledge after arriving from Southampton in a £25m transfer last summer. It appears almost inevitable the player won’t be featuring in the Championship next term, though the Hammers possess considerable leverage as their star seeks a route away from the London Stadium.

Spurs in for Rashford

The battle for Marcus Rashford’s services is reportedly intensifying with Tottenham expressing interest in the forward. The England striker is currently on World Cup duty but remains front-page news back home as speculation surrounding his future continues.

Following a remarkably successful loan spell at Barcelona, the Catalans opted against activating the buy clause in his agreement. Nevertheless, their missed opportunity could prove to be Spurs‘ windfall as The i Paper claimed the north London outfit are eager to strike a deal for Rashford.

Spurs have substantially bolstered their defensive ranks following the completion of deals for Jan Paul van Hecke, Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi. Nevertheless, Roberto De Zerbi has yet to strengthen his attacking options.

It’s logical that Tottenham would pursue additional forward firepower given Dejan Kulusevski was absent for the entire 2025/26 season due to injury. Dominic Solanke and Mohammed Kudus also endured lengthy spells on the sidelines through injury this past campaign, while Xavi Simons was forced to miss the World Cup after suffering a late-season setback.

Rashford’s existing £300,000-a-week salary is understood to be the primary obstacle, although he accepted reduced terms to join Barca last summer. Should he prove willing to make additional financial compromises to secure a permanent switch, Spurs could extend their summer spending spree by pursuing the pacey winger this summer.
