One person has been killed and another left with life-threatening injuries after a shooting at a World Cup fan zone in San Jose, California, police have said

One person has died and another is fighting for their life following a shooting at a World Cup fan zone in California. Police confirmed the shooting occurred at a popular entertainment venue in San Jose that had been showing tournament matches.

No World Cup games were being broadcast at the time of the incident, with the day’s sole fixture in the competition concluding around 2pm local time (9pm GMT).

“One victim was pronounced deceased on scene. The second victim was transported to a ⁠local hospital with life-threatening injuries,” San Jose police said in a post on social media platform X.
