Major prepare disruption after automobile ‘careered by means of fencing’ onto railway line
Great Western Railway (GWR) said the car is blocking the railway between St Erth and St Ives in the Carbis Bay area, with all train services cancelled after a motorist ‘lost control of their vehicle’
A railway line in Cornwall has remained shut all day after a vehicle “careered through fencing” and ended up on the tracks.
Great Western Railway (GWR) said the motor is obstructing the railway between St Erth and St Ives in the Carbis Bay area. Initial reports of the incident emerged at around 6am, according to traffic monitoring site, Inrix.
Consequently, all rail services between the stations have been axed throughout the day so far and disruption was originally expected until midday.
However, GWR confirmed just before 3pm that the vehicle has now been removed and it is hoped that the St Ives services would restart at 3:19pm from St Erth to St Ives and 3:34pm from St Ives to St Erth, reports Cornwall Live.
In a video shared on X, Craig Munday, the mobile operations manager at Network Rail, explained that the incident occurred when a driver had “lost control of their vehicle and careered through the fencing and onto the line”.
He added at the time that Network Rail was “doing all we can to get the railway back up and running”.
The footage appears to show a white or silver motor has gone over a hedge and landed on its front end on the train line.
GWR said earlier that it has been unable to source any coaches to operate in place of the rail service but it has arranged limited taxis to operate between St Erth and St Ives.
