Three evil character traits behind monster Jamie Varley’s abuse of Preston Davey revealed

The monster was handed a whole life order after the evidence against him and the level of depravity shocked the judge and jury.

Psychologists say that Jamie Varley showed three evil character traits which allowed him to feel no remorse about the torment he put baby Preston Davey through in his final days.

A court heard how sicko Varley inflicted numerous injuries and tortured the baby constantly in the months leading up to him eventually being killed.

The monster was handed a whole life order after the evidence against him and the level of depravity shocked the judge and jury. And now mental health experts have lifted the lid on the extent of evil within Varley, to be able to carry out the acts he did against the poor tot.

What Varley did, many believe, sets him apart from other paedophiles and even merciless killers, due to the prolonged nature of the abuse the baby suffered at the hands of those adults whose very job it was to keep him safe and cared for.

A widely respected academic study into the nature of evil, something that has occupied the minds of philosophers and psychiatrists down the ages, has been published which states there are three aspects t being diagnosed as properly “evil”.

The paper was written by a Columbian team and has appeared in the journal Psychological Science.

They wrote about a 2013 research programme which was done to expose the darkest sides of the human mind at the University of British Columbia in Canada.

A computer game was set up that allowed participants to punish a competitor with a loud noise through their headphones. Some volunteers chose to do so enthusiastically.

The paper reads: “There wasn’t just a willingness to do it but a motivation to enjoy, to put in some extra effort to have the opportunity to hurt other individuals.”

Taking perverse pleasure in such behaviour was “indicative of psychopathy, including a callous insensitivity and immunity to the feelings of others”.

This, combined with two other unpleasant character traits – “Machiavellianism, ‘coolly manipulative’ and narcissism, ‘selfish and vain – they formed a so-called ‘Dark Triad’, colloquially dubbed ‘a triple whammy of nastiness’” they say.

It is the same traits, it is claimed, that vile Varley, 37, displayed. The report looks at just one of the incidents described in court that gave an indication of how little Preston’s life had been.

Around a month before he was killed, Varley was home alone with Preston and was attempting to stop him sleeping, despite him being clearly exhausted.

During this time, he starts filming Preston. He deliberately keeps him awake by playing the soundtrack of Moana, a Disney film, loudly in the background and keeping the bright lights on.

Preston, despite all this, starts to fall asleep, only for Varley to loudly shout “Boo” at him. In the video, Preston opens his eyes, terrified. Other horror incidents happened to the baby.

On the day he died, Preston had been sexually assaulted twice leaving him with devastating internal injuries. A post-mortem confirmed he had no water in his lungs and that he had been smothered while also finding more than 30 visible bruises and other internal injuries, and bruises.

Now Varley is serving time behind bars and is said to be “not coping” and “refusing to leave his cell”. The “terrified” sicko is said to be “feeling sorry for himself” and making himself “more of a target” with his behaviour at HMP Wakefield.

Varley is believed to be in segregation, with guards keeping an eye on him 24/7 amid fears he is a suicide risk. He is confined to his cell for the majority of the day but offered minimal time out for exercise, something which insiders claim he is refusing to do.

A source said: “Officers are keeping close tabs on him but that won’t last forever as they don’t have enough staff. They have even offered him separate exercise – although he hasn’t been taking it.
