England lastly bury curse of Mick Jagger by beating Norway whereas rocker watches on

The Rolling Stones frontman notoriously jinxed every football team he turned up to support – until he watched the Three Lions beat Norway to reach the semi-finals

England got some real satisfaction from their World Cup victory over Norway – for they finally buried the curse of Mick Jagger. Fans had begged ‘gimme shelter’ from the Rolling Stones frontman because whenever he seemed to show up the team he was supporting lost.

When Jagger appeared in the Miami Stadium to cheer on the Three Lions in Saturday’s World Cup quarter-final England supporters feared it could be the ‘last time’ they would see Thomas Tuchel ’s team in the tournament.

And when Norway took a shock first half lead from a miss-hit cross they were resigned to the fact ‘you can’t always get what you want’.

But two goals from midfield maestro Jude Bellingham turned the match ‘around and around’ – and helped clinch a 2-1 victory after extra time.

England will now play arch enemies Argentina in Atlanta, Georgia, on Wednesday in the semi-finals with their dream of ending 60 years of hurt alive and kicking.

Though 39-year-old legend Lionel Messi has notched up 205 games for Argentina over 21 years in which he has banged in 125 international goals it will be the first time he has ever played England.

And after burying the Jagger jinx Jude and his team-mates will be confident they can KO Messi’s World Cup career too. As the final whistle secured England’s triumph fans of the team – and the Stones – from all over the world took to Instagram to declare the singer’s curse beaten.

John Curtis wrote: “The Jagger jinx is lifted. The world cup is ENGLAND’s to be lifted.” Garry Elderton said: “None of that jinx stuff anymore – get in Sir Mick.” Another fan crowed: “The spell was broken. Congrats!”

One more wrote: “Mick only brings joy and good luck.” “England won thanks to Mick,” claimed another, while one hailed him: “Mick Lucky Charm.”

The curse dated back 16 years when Jagger showed up to cheer on the US against Ghana at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. When Ghana won 2-1 in extra time to reach the quarter-finals few realised what an incredible hex was about to hit the football world.

At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil Jagger twice tweeted his support for England. They lost both matches to Italy and Uruguay and were eliminated after finishing bottom of their group.

Jagger then showed up to support host nation Brazil – only for them to be walloped 7-1 by Germany in the semi-finals. Upset Brazilians branded him ‘The Angel Of Doom’ and local TV station R7 called him ‘the biggest jinx in history’.

Some fans dressed cardboard cut-outs of the singer in the colours of Chile or Colombia in a bid to deflect the curse. At the time Jagger laughed it off, saying: “OK, I take responsibility for the first German goal…but not the other six!”

But his horrible hoodoo struck again when he turned up at the 2018 World Cup semi-final in Russia – to see England beaten 2-1 by Croatia.

Even though he was never spotted at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar some fans still joked he was to blame for England’s quarter-final defeat by France.

Mick told the Daily Star last week he was planning to fly out to Miami for the quarter-final – even though his curse had claimed another victim.

He revealed he had been on hand to witness his beloved Arsenal lose the Champions League final to PSG in Hungary a few weeks ago. But he laughed: “You can’t blame me for Arsenal missing two penalties.”

Perhaps understandably Sir Mick stopped short of saying the Three Lions will lift the World Cup for the first time since their sole previous triumph in 1966. He said: “They’ve got a good chance but I’ll never say we’re going all the way.”

Now England fans will be praying he stays in the US for the semis as a good luck charm. His was not the only hex broken by the Norway victory.

The curse of ITV also appears to have been well and truly buried with the commercial broadcaster – which had a remarkable jinx on the national team for nearly 30 years – screening three England World Cup wins.

Since 1998 England had a 75% win ratio in matches shown by the BBC during World Cups. That is made up of 12 wins, a draw and three defeats.

Before the tournament the Lions’ win rate dropped to just 18% for matches shown on ITV – comprising just three victories, six draws and eight losses. But ITV screened both England’s group game victories over Croatia and Panama – plus the quarter-final triumph.

The only match the Lions failed to win – their 0-0 bore draw with Ghana – was shown by the BBC.
