Manchester United have launched their pre-season preparations as their summer transfer business is heating up.

Michael Carrick wrapped up three signings ahead of Saturday’s friendly – a 1-0 defeat to Championship side Wrexham – with more arrivals on the horizon. Carrick has strengthened his midfield following Casemiro’s exit, bringing in Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans for a combined fee exceeding £80million.

There’s also fresh competition between the sticks with Karl Darlow’s arrival, while Andre Onana has prolonged his Trabzonspor loan for another campaign. Last term’s third-place finish secured United’s return to Champions League action. This demands a deeper squad, so additional spending before the transfer deadline is expected. Here’s all the latest news from Old Trafford.

Ederson pledges allegiance to Atalanta

Atalanta midfielder Ederson has penned fresh terms with the Italian outfit after his move to United collapsed at the final hurdle.

The Brazil international was close to sealing a £38m switch to Old Trafford before the deal fell through following a medical, reports the Mirror.

Following the discovery of a problem during the medical examination, United lost interest in the deal as originally structured.

They have been unable to renegotiate fresh terms and in a huge U-turn, Ederson has now pledged his future to Atalanta.

“After an initial four-year spell in the Nerazzurri colours, marked by outstanding results and mutual satisfaction, the bond between Ederson Jose dos Santos Lourenco da Silva and Atalanta BC has grown even stronger,” a club statement read.

“Since his first season with the club, the 2022/23 campaign, Ederson has established himself as one of the team’s technical leaders, becoming a fan favourite thanks to his quality, determination and competitive spirit.”

Celtic is understood to be a possible destination after the Scottish outfit saw a January transfer collapse. A switch to continental Europe could also be on the cards should he not end up heading north of the border.

Fredricson, an England youth international, made his United bow under Ruben Amorim towards the close of the 2024/25 campaign.

He has managed just four senior outings after progressing through the academy, the latest of those coming against Newcastle on Boxing Day.
