Pit Boss’ offering is not the only multi-used grillers on the market. In fact, compared to others, it comes with less bells and whistles. For example, other smoker grills come with apps to gauge and control temperature levels.
But this comparatively stripped back model is actually much better and simple to use. Adding to this, the cooking experience – which is spread over two shelves – is completely smooth.
Even heat and sufficient and quick warming meant that my pork shoulder took less time than expected, while coming out perfectly juicy and soft.
The biggest extra I found with the grilling beast is that you get a Flame Broiler. The Flame Broiler is a series of slits in the heat shield that sits directly over the fire pot.

In the same vein, the grill has an impressive smokeless design. Except for the few minutes when the grill heats up, it generates clean, clear smoke. This is especially important because dirty smoke can add an unwanted flavor.
Overall, the Pit Boss Austin XL Onyx edition is moderately priced for what it is – currently on sale for £549 down from £749 – and worth the investment.
