When Mexico and South Africa kicked off the World Cup way back at the start of June, few fans predicted that two of the most iconic moments of the tournament would feature Wayne Rooney and Danny Murphy.

Rooney delivered a scathing takedown of the, quite frankly, absurd half-time show, while Murphy recalled a tale to rival Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey as he introduced football fans to the tales of Bob the cat.

And in a World Cup that was defined by its stoppages and quarters, sorry hydration breaks, there was more chance than ever for pundits to shine.

Spain brought a close to the action on Sunday, as they won their second World Cup by beating Argentina in a ill-tempered clash.
