The ex of an influencer who was murdered by her husband who she accused of being a paedophile in a social media trend has revealed he begged her to break up with the man.
Influencer Sara Gilson, 43, and Jeremiah “Shawn” Duffey, 48, were found dead at their home in Owasso, Oklahoma on July 23. A child in the home had called 911 before emergency services discovered the deceased couple at the scene.
Weeks before the fatal shooting in Owasso, Oklahoma, Gilson posted a video to social media claiming her husband was a paedophile on TikTok. The video was part of the current Netflix documentary trend, popular across social media sites.

Authorities have said Gilson was shot by Duffey who then turned the weapon on himself, ending his own life.
Speaking to PEOPLE Lyle Landers, 46, stated he didn’t approve of Gilson’s relationship with Duffey. “Shawn had been a risk for her since they got together,” he says. He added: “She had been stuck in a relationship where domestic abuse seemed ‘okay’.”
Landers, who shares two children with Gilson, said: “I had begged her for five years to get away from him. I had offered to help her, in any way I could, to get away from him. But he seemed to have some sort of control over her, and she couldn’t seem to get away.”
Landers said his ex was “a mom, a daughter, a sister and a friend,” as well as “a beautiful person, inside and out.” He added: “She loved people immensely, and without judgment. Her greatest achievement in life, though, was in our two babies.
“She was always so worried before we had kids that she wouldn’t know what to do, or that she wouldn’t be a good mom. Turns out, she was a great mom.”
“She went over the top for our kids, and always made sure that they knew she loved them.”

Landers said he and Gilson divorced about seven years ago. Despite their past they had gotten to the point where they were friends. He said: “It had been the best thing in the world for our kids, but also for us.
“We coparent as well as anyone, and it has shown in our kids. She was a wonderful mother and would die for her children. In fact, her trying to protect children is what ultimately led to her death.”
Gilson was murdered after she posted a video to social media claiming her husband was a paedophile on TikTok. The trend sees social media users pretend to sit down for an interview as if they are getting ready to feature in a documentary.

Gilson wrote on her video: “Preparing for when Netflix drops a documentary about my soon to be ex-husband who I just found out is a paedophile.”
The set-up has been used for social media users to joke about numerous subjects from funny inside jokes to traumatic life events. The caption of the video read: “I wish I was joking. #plottwist #netflix #documentary.”
Back on June 10, Gilson submitted an emergency protective order against Duffey. The man was immediately ordered from their home and demanded to stay 100 yards away from the woman, PEOPLE reports.

On June 23 the proactive order against the man was extended to August 24. Gilson claimed in the protective order Duffey had a gun and had threatened to end his life “and went on the run.”
Also on June 10 – on the same date as Gilson – another woman filed an additional protective order on behalf of her minor daughter against Duffey.
Duffey allegedly kissed and touched the girl, the mother claimed, per The Oklahoman. The child claimed to her mother that Duffey engaged in additional inappropriate behaviour towards her.

This behaviour included sending her messages and inviting her to his hotel room. The child also claimed the man also offered her money “to keep her quiet.”
A GoFundMe has been set up for Gilson and Landers’ two children. The description of the page reads: “Sara was an incredible mom. Her children were the center of her world, and everything she did was for them. She loved them fiercely, worked hard to provide for them, and dreamed of giving them the best life possible.”
It continues: “We are creating this GoFundMe to help support Sara’s children as they navigate the difficult days, months, and years ahead.”
