Everyone needs a good bin. That’s a sentiment that I’m sure most people would agree with. It’s certainly something that I’ve come to appreciate the older I get.
And my view on the matter has only been reinforced since getting hold of EKO’s Econova Sensor Bin 80L. At the risk of perhaps sounding like an over-excited football pundit, it’s a game changer.
Impressive storage capacity, sleek design, motion sensor function – it’s got it all. And, although at £119.99 it may not be the cheapest on the market, the quality of the product is pretty obvious from the get go.
The bin has an 80L storage capacity
The first thing that grabs your attention is how smart it looks, due to its stainless steel design and fingerprint resistant finish. This helps to keep it free of any grubby hand marks, while it’s incredibly easy to clean, should you spill anything down it.
The lid hides the bin liner from view, which also helps to keep it looking neat and tidy. As well as that, its shape enables it to fit easily against the wall and blend seamlessly into the kitchen.
So, on the appearance front alone, it’s clear that we’re onto a winner. But, of course, the most important feature is its functionality – and whether it can actually do the job.

Fortunately, there’s no disappointment there. Its large 80L size means it has an impressive storage space, which in practice means that you don’t have to worry about emptying it for what seems like ages. From what I have experienced so far too, the tight-fitting lid also appears to contain any potential odour.
There is also no inner bucket, which frees up space for the liner itself. In the words of EKO itself, this allows you to have ‘full use’ of the capacity on offer.
When it comes to how it looks and how it actually works, then, it’s ticking all the boxes. But there’s more on offer still – and that’s what really sets this bin apart.
It has a hands-free function which enables you to open and close it without having to press any buttons, simply by hovering over a motion sensor. This is a huge help when it comes to preparing food and cooking, as it stops you from getting anything on it.
The lid stays opens for a few seconds before shutting, with a blue LED display that counts down. There are buttons to open and close it too, so that you can keep it open for longer if needed.
All in all, I’m very impressed. I now can’t imagine my home without it – and there’s no going back.
