Major UK financial institution confirms way forward for 696 branches throughout UK – see full listing
Nationwide has confirmed the future of its 696 bank branch network as it promises to keep all branches open until at least 2030 amid widespread UK bank branch closures
Nationwide has confirmed the future of its 696 bank branch network in the UK as part of its commitment to customers. The building society has reiterated its promise to keep all of its branches, comprising 605 Nationwide and 91 Virgin Money outlets, open on UK high streets until at least 2030.
This means customers should not anticipate any bank closures for the next four years. The pledge comes despite a wave of competitor bank closures, including Lloyds, Halifax, Bank of Scotland, NatWest and Santander, with over 200 branches shutting down across the UK this year.
Nationwide emphasised many vulnerable and elderly customers still depend on in-person support from a branch, making its locations a “valued part of the UK’s high streets”. However, many younger individuals also utilise branches, with more than one in 10 of its new student accounts being opened in-branch in the new academic year, according to the building society.
As of 4 June, Nationwide boasts more branches than any other banking provider on the UK high street, totalling 696. This follows the building society’s acquisition of Virgin Money in 2024, adding an extra 91 branches to its existing 605 Nationwide sites, reports the Express.
The commitment to keeping branches open until at least 2030 also extends to Virgin Money branches, even if these are situated near a Nationwide branch.
Commenting on its branch pledge earlier this year, Mandy Beech, Nationwide’s Director of Retail Services, said: “As banks continue to close their doors and step back from the high street, Nationwide will become the UK’s largest group branch network.
“This is a major milestone for us and reflects our belief in the value of in-person banking and the reassurance it offers our members and the communities we support.
“Our data shows branches are very much valued by our customers, with usage rising, and as part of our investment in giving customers real choice in how they bank – whether online, in branch or on the phone – we’re proud to stand by our commitment to keep every one of our branches open until 2030.”
The building society revealed it has witnessed a notable surge in account openings in areas where it represents the “last branch in town” and since January 2025, a further 33 Nationwide branches have become the final ones remaining when rival banks have shuttered their outlets.
Nationwide stated that a third (33%) of its current accounts and roughly a fifth (22%) of savings accounts were established in branch during the six months to the end of September 2025, with numbers rising compared with the previous year.
The society also utilises branches to host dementia clinics via Dementia UK’s specialist nurses, to conduct digital lessons to enhance people’s tech confidence and to offer “safe spaces” to support victim-survivors of domestic abuse. Nationwide’s pledge to keep its 696 branches operational comes in the wake of Lloyds Banking Group announcing 79 new branch closures this year, with 74 set to shut down in 2026 and five in 2027.
