Brits are literally losing their lives, one week at a time, due to boring and avoidable delays such as supermarket queues and traffic jams

Brits lose nearly a week every year to life’s most irritating everyday delays, according to new research. Traffic jams, late trains, supermarket queues and dodgy Wi-Fi are among the mundane problems eating up an average of six days annually.

Almost one in five people, or 17%, reckon they spend the equivalent of an entire fortnight dealing with minor mishaps. Travel and commuting cause the most frequent chaos, with 35% naming train delays, traffic jams and the hunt for a parking space among their biggest bugbears.

Household chores and long supermarket queues were highlighted by 18%, while 15% blamed the unreliable British weather for wrecking their plans. Another 13% said technology-related dramas, including lengthy software updates and patchy internet connections, regularly tested their patience.

The research found the disruption often continued long after the original problem had been resolved.

Nearly two-thirds of respondents, 64%, said everyday inconveniences left them frustrated, while 43% felt stressed, while almost three-quarters admitted the effects could spill into the rest of their day.

Some 16% said their irritation affected their next interaction with a colleague, friend or relative, while 15% claimed it could ruin their mood for hours.

Another 11% said an unexpected setback could make them want to cancel their plans and head home.

Now tequila brand Jose Cuervo, who commissioned the research, is offering fed-up Brits the chance to exchange their latest grievance for a free canned cocktail.

Its temporary “Inconvenience Store” will open in Soho on Thursday, September 10, and Friday, September 11.

Visitors will be asked to write down a recent annoyance on a ticket before exchanging it for a chilled Sparkling Margarita, with every drink expected to be free of charge for those that partake.

The stunt marks the launch of Jose Cuervo’s new ready-to-drink Sparkling Margarita cans, which went on sale in independent convenience stores on September 3 with a recommended price of £2.55 each.

The Inconvenience Store, at 60–62 Broadwick Street, Soho, London, will open from noon on Thursday and between 1pm and 11pm on Friday.
