Courteeners know why tremendous fan and Prime Minister Andy Burnham will keep the course
Manchester rockers Courteeners reckon having a Prime Minister who likes football and going to gigs like their pal Andy Burnham is bringing “normality back” to politics.
PM Burnham is one of the band’s biggest fans and has been spotted regularly at their concerts up and down the country.
Lead singer Liam Fray, at No2 in the charts with new album God Bless The Band, told the Star: “We’ve met him numerous times. He’s just always been utterly, utterly himself, and just a genuine person.
“I’ve seen him spend time with my parents backstage at gigs and stuff, and listen the people in Manchester they’re not daft, and he’s been so popular there for so long here.
“I think people just see a bit of normality in him. You know, whether that’s going to the football or going to gigs.”
Burnham loves his local bands like Elbow and Blossoms, but he has said Courteeners are “head and shoulders the best live band around” and described their gigs, such as at the Albert Hall and Heaton Park, as phenomenal events.
He praised their distinctive attitude and sound, noting that if you are from the North West, “you can’t help but respond to them”.
And if you’re wondering what he’s playing in No10 he named their second album, Falcon as a favourite and has publicly quoted their lyrics – including lines from Take Over the World and Not Nineteen Forever in political campaigns
The lads have seen first hand how much he cares about every day folk, as well as his music.
Liam, 41, added: “Surely that can’t be a bad thing to have somebody like that behind that black door. Someone with a little bit more concern, maybe, for the average person that has previously gone before.
“So it can’t be a bad thing, can it? I just wish him all the best, you know what I mean, I hope people get behind him.”
If Burnham doesn’t last long as PM it sounds like he can always join the band.
The Courteeners tour arenas in November.
