The Three Amigos

I secretly hate my mates. I hang out with three blokes that I’ve known for years.

They think I’m a happy, easy-going person. Every time we meet up, I smile and joke along but I’m silently seething inside. I resent their success, their confidence and luck.

One mate is from a wealthy family. He never had to save for his first car or worry about paying for teenage holidays because he’s had everything handed to him on a plate.

At the moment he’s showing off yet another flash watch – about his tenth so far. He works for his dad and will take over the family firm. How is this fair when I have to graft for every penny in my pocket?

Another mate is too handsome for his own good. He has girls throwing themselves at him everywhere he goes. He runs bars up and down the country and is always boasting about the sneaky sex he enjoys on business trips.

He brands himself the ‘king of the one night stand’ and I hate him for it. He’s a sleaze ball. His long-term girlfriend is gorgeous and deserves better. Should I tell her that he has no respect for her and talks about her like a piece of meat?

Then there’s the third amigo; the city slicker whom I hate the most.

He has zero personality or charm but works in finance and owns the best apartment I’ve ever seen.

He only has to click his fingers and another £100,000 lands in his account. Women only sleep with him because he’s rich and other guys only tolerate him because he’s going places.

He loves to ‘jokingly’ call me The Charity Case which I loathe him for. I never have any luck with anything, money, work, or women. I’m single and bitter. Everyone around me is having a fantastic time and my life is going nowhere.

Why is everything so unfair?

JANE SAYS: I urge you to step back and stop obsessing about your mates.

I very much doubt if any of them have perfect lives – because no one does. I suspect the spoilt brat is under pressure from his family to succeed and make them proud.

The bar owner – for all of his bravado and bs – still needs to ensure that his businesses work and turn a profit. While the city slicker will have bosses or clients who expect results.

Don’t be taken in by cheap boasts because life is tough for everyone – and don’t go sticking your nose into their relationships either. I get it that you’re bitter and frustrated, but you need to rise up and be bigger than this.

Being angry and small minded isn’t going to get you anywhere in life.

What lessons have you learnt?

What mistakes are you determined never to make again?

I suggest you take stock by accepting that life isn’t fair. If you’re seriously looking for love, companionship, and cash, then start being a lot less judgemental and a lot more proactive.

Make your own luck; make your own money and use your time productively and wisely. Unless you start focussing, you’re going to sink without a trace.

Sadly, if you don’t like your old mates, if you believe they’re distracting and holding you back, then find the strength to move on without them.

You’re not joined at the hip and maybe you’ll finally flower away from their egos and crushing company.

Cruel reaction

I kissed my newborn grandson on the lips, and now my daughter-in-law is keeping me from him.

She says I’m disgusting; that I could have given him germs. She doesn’t trust me. I’m devastated. I never meant to do any harm. How do I make her understand that I’m don’t deserve this cruelty?

JANE SAYS: Babies have a weak immune system.

Your daughter-in-law was only trying to protect her son from cold sores and respiratory infections – and she’s entitled to call the shots.

You need to apologise and promise to be guided by her in future. Your feelings have been hurt but this is not about you.

Ask your daughter-in-law to give you a second chance. Listen and learn because she is clearly up to date with modern guidelines.
