A footballer has been banned from all forms of the sport for five years after a savage attack on a supporter during a match.
Calum Merrin admitted inflicting grievous bodily harm in the shocking incident, which happened in an FA Vase match when he was playing for Elburton Villa, a South West Peninsula League Premier Division (East) side based in Plymouth.
His violent outburst left the victim with serious injuries requiring extensive surgery. The 21-year-old midfielder and another man set upon the male fan during an away match for Elburton Villa at Brixham in Devon on November 9, 2024. Brixham won 3-0 in the Isuzu FA Vase encounter.

Merrin, of Dartmeet Avenue, Plymouth, joined Liskeard Athletic in Cornwall this summer. But the Western League Premier Division outfit have confirmed Merrin is no longer playing for them.
Merrin and the other man involved pleaded guilty to one charge of causing grievous bodily harm in an appearance at Plymouth Magistrates’ Court in June this year, reports Cornwall Live.
It’s understood the victim suffered severe injuries necessitating an operation and the placement of six screws into a wound.
Both Merrin and the other man were given two-year prison sentences, suspended for two years. Magistrates ordered them to complete 300 hours of unpaid work and to pay the victim £1,500 in compensation. A restraining order prohibiting them from contacting their victim was also issued.
Following his criminal conviction, Merrin was reported to the Football Association (FA). Cornwall FA said that since Merrin had been representing a Devon-based club at the time, the matter fell outside their remit.
The FA has now confirmed the punishment to exclude Merrin from all football for five years, backdated to when the incident took place.
An FA spokesperson explained that in matters of this kind, the FA’s disciplinary procedures can be guided by the results of related criminal court decisions.
Since the court verdict and accompanying evidence were only recently obtained, disciplinary measures from the county FA were implemented after that process had been completed.
The spokesperson said: “Calum Merrin has been sanctioned for a breach of FA Rule E3.1 during a fixture between Brixham FC and Elburton Villa on November 9, 2024.
“It was alleged that Calum Merrin used violent conduct and/or threatening and/or abusive and/or indecent and/or insulting words or behaviour towards a supporter.
“It was further alleged that this constituted ‘assault by a participant on another participant or any other person’, as defined in FA Regulations.
“Calum Merrin accepted the charge, and an independent Regulatory Commission imposed a five-year suspension from all football and football-related activities backdated to the charge date, and a £150 fine. It also imposed 10 Disciplinary Points on the club.”
