Fears Russian plague outbreak ‘began in organic weapons lab’ as new concept emerges

A former White House official has warned a mysterious Russian plague death in Siberia could be linked to a secret military biological weapons programme

Fears are growing that a suspected plague death in Russia could be linked to a secret military bioweapons programme after a grave warning was sounded by a former White House official. Dr Ashish Jha, who served as a Covid-19 response co-ordinator under Joe Biden, has voiced serious concerns over the death of a 28-year-old lab worker in Siberia.

Young researcher Darya Shipilova died after falling ill at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute. Reports claim she may have accidentally smashed a vial containing the Yersinia pestis bacterium — the deadly pathogen behind the Black Death that wiped out millions in the Middle Ages.

Russian officials have insisted the scientist died from “pneumonia of unknown cause.” But as nearly 200 people are placed into strict medical isolation, experts are worried that Moscow is hiding the truth.

In a series of alarming posts on X (formerly Twitter), Dr Jha warned that the secretive response in Siberia could suggest a high-level military cover-up rather than a standard lab spill.

He said: “I’ve been gathering facts and trying to understand what is happening before weighing in. Now that I have, I have to say — I’m concerned.”

He pointed out that while the facility in Irkutsk is officially classed as a civilian institute, Vladimir Putin‘s regime is widely known to maintain an active, expanding biological weapons network.

Reports have also emerged that Russia’s intelligence service, the FSB, has taken control of the scene, with armed security officers seen accompanying ambulances transporting exposed contacts.

Dr Jha said: “If accurate, that’s not the posture of a routine natural outbreak, even a normal lab accident. This is the situation I’ve worried about for a long time…Not that a country with a weapons program deciding to use it, [but] that we have an accidental release from a deliberate program.”

The chilling scenario has drawn immediate comparisons to one of the Cold War’s most notorious biological disasters.

In 1979, deadly anthrax spores escaped a secret Soviet military facility in Sverdlovsk, killing at least 66 people.

The Kremlin aggressively denied the leak for years, falsely claiming victims had consumed tainted meat.

Dr Jha cautioned that history could be repeating itself, but with far higher stakes in the modern era of advanced bio-engineering.

He said: “US intelligence assess that Russia’s scientists continue developing biological weapons capabilities. Those programs operate in secret. Nobody outside inspects them and nobody inside has much incentive to admit when something goes wrong.”

He added: “Russian authorities owe the world more transparency on exactly what happened in Irkutsk…We have to assume we may not know the full truth and have to act to build up our biodefense accordingly.”

Local reports suggest emergency precautions remain in place at several regional hospitals. Kremlin officials have refused to confirm whether any further plague diagnoses have been made.
