Failed Chelsea wonderkid ‘higher than Cristiano Ronaldo’ ended up in jail earlier than grownup profession
Fabio Paim was loaned to Chelsea by Sporting in 2008 but the winger failed to make a first-team appearance for the Blues and has since reportedly embarked on a new wild career
Fabio Paim was once described by Aurélio Pereira, the Sporting scout who discovered Portuguese icons Quaresma, Ronaldo and Moutinho, as better than Cristiano. He said: “Do you think Cristiano is good? Wait to see Fábio Paim.”
So why has nobody really heard of him apart from footballing nerds? Well, the story really starts when Chelsea secured Paim on loan from Sporting during the summer of 2008 following his impressive displays in Portugal. However, the former winger managed just four months at Stamford Bridge before heading back to his native country and beginning a nomadic career that took him to numerous different clubs.
He later claimed that he was very, very well paid at Chelsea, yet still failed to leave any kind of mark on the pitch. Paim progressed through Sporting’s youth system alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner once suggesting his fellow countryman possessed superior ability to his own.

Paim represented Portugal at youth level and was earmarked for a bright future in football. However, he never earned a senior appearance for Chelsea under Luiz Felipe Scolari, being limited to reserve squad duties.
He subsequently endured disappointing stints across nations including Qatar, Malta and Lithuania, before retiring after a period with Starowice Dolne in Poland.
His professional senior career evolved into one that can be described a “journeyman” marked by unfulfilled potential and brief spells across lower leagues and multiple continents. A high-profile loan move to Chelsea in 2008 saw him feature solely for their reserve side without registering a single first-team minute.
After leaving Sporting permanently in 2010, Paim became a footballing journeyman, turning out for clubs in Angola, Qatar, Malta, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Brazil, and Poland’s fifth tier. Across all his senior domestic league appearances, he managed roughly 60 recorded matches and just four goals.
Internationally, Paim never earned a senior cap for Portugal, with his highest international honour stopping at a single substitute appearance for the Under-21 side against Ukraine in October 2008. Despite qualifying to represent Angola through his heritage, a call-up never materialised. Paim formally retired in 2021, standing as modern football’s ultimate cautionary tale about the perils of immense early hype and lost discipline.
The now-38 year old never fulfilled his potential on the football pitch and hung up his boots at the beginning of 2021. Post-football, he join the adult industry, and was branded a “lion” for his passionate performances in front of the cameras.
Co-star Diana Melancia, who declared: “We thought he was going to be nervous and it wouldn’t work out – but Fabio turned out to be a lion. He was good at football and he is good at this. He’s going to be a success. I hope this film is the first of many with Paim.”, reports the Express.
The former footballer was held in prison for a year after hanging up his boots on drug trafficking charges, but was eventually acquitted because the evidence used was deemed to be not aadmissible by the court.
Now, Paim spends him time watching the youngsters of Portugal play, while also joining the after-dinner speaking circuit in his native country.
He also flaunts clothes for several sporting brands, whiel also seems to have a connection to a botox clinic that he links to on his Instagram bio.
