Award-winning horse racing tipster’s greatest bets for Newmarket and York

In his regular column, Daily Star Chief Tipster Jason Heavey marks your card for the weekend racing and beyond. Jason is one of the country’s leading newspaper tipsters.

In 2023 he did the rare double of winning both national tipping titles – the Racing Post Press Challenge and also the coveted Racing Post Naps Table. Jason is currently the leading “red-top” tipster in the country in the National Press Challenge table.

DARKNESS FALLS (3.00) gets the vote in a mouth-watering head-to-head clash in the Darley Dewhurst Stakes on Saturday at Newmarket. Coolmore’s son of Camelot won his maiden by seven lengths at the Curragh before running away with the Group One Golden Fleece Stakes at Leopardstown.

He is dropping back in trip to 7f but he has plenty of toe and is preferred to the unbeaten Godolphin colt Desert Castle. Charlie Appleby’s son of Frankel won the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster and there is little between the big two.

I’m rolling the dice in the Club Godolphin Cesarewitch Handicap with big outsider LETSBEFRANK. Jim Goldie sends him down from Scotland to try to plunder the big pot. He can race lazily and is a tricky ride but Lauren Young takes off 5lb and he stays forever. At around 50-1 he is an each-way bet to nothing.

HAATEM (1.15) goes well on the Rowley Mile course and returned to form last month when winning a valuable race in Kentucky. Ryan Moore gets the ride in the Modern Games Darley Stakes, which should be well within his compass.

Mark Johnston won the Native Trail Zetland Stakes five times and son Charlie aims to bag his first with BOWDENS (1.50). He made an impressive winning debut at Hamilton in bad ground and has been largely ignored in the market at 22-1.

ROCK MONTREAL (2.25) has a big reputation in the Roger Varian yard and after a nice winning debut he narrowly failed to reel in Forbidden Fire in a Listed race at Doncaster.

He can go one better in the Group Three Emirates Autumn Stakes. ITV are showing three races from York where the ground is certain to be on the slow side.

DUBAI CHAMPION (1.30) chased home Mussab (winner yesterday) at Ayr and gets the vote in the Sky Bet Rockingham Stakes while the unexposed NOBODY KNOWS (2.05) should enjoy conditions in the Sky Bet For The Fans Handicap.

FINE INTERVIEW (3.17) should go very well in the Sky Bet Sprint Trophy with Jack Nicholls – fresh from winning the Prix de l’Abbaye on Miss Yechance – taking off a useful 3lb.

Elsewhere I fancy MASKED MAN (4.02, nb) to win the Wasdell Group Silver Trophy at Chepstow for the in-form Nigel and Willy Twiston Davies. He won first time out last season and scored three times from five starts.

GALLIVANTED (2.10) also appeals for Harry Derham off bottom weight in the Paul Ferguson’s Jumpers To Follow Four Years Old Hurdle.

Watch out for NATIONAL ANTHEM (3.57) who is making his debut at York. He is very highly regarded by the John and Thady Gosden yard.

FUTURE WINNERS

STATE OF WYOMING: Caught the eye last time and Paddy Twomey’s colt is well entered up next week in Ireland.

SHARED ODYSSEY: Flagged this horse two weeks ago and he has since come second at 20-1. Entered at Nottingham on Wednesday. Will win races.
