Tesla Roadster flying automotive unveiled as Elon Musk declares ‘the longer term is right here’
Tesla has unveiled its next-generation Roadster sports EV, with Elon Musk declaring that ‘flying cars are real’ after the car performed a stunning flight demonstration using SpaceX cold-gas thrusters — with production set for 2028
Tesla has unveiled a new sports car, with Elon Musk boldly proclaiming that ‘flying cars are real’. The next-generation Roadster was revealed at a Texas testing facility owned by SpaceX, another of Musk’s publicly listed companies.
He gave customers a long-anticipated peek at the electric vehicle maker’s latest top-of-the-range model, demonstrating its incredible ‘ability to fly’ as it soared over other parked Tesla vehicles.
The breathtaking display saw the Roadster climb a huge curved ramp before launching into the air, performing a flip, and landing safely back on the ground.
“Well, it worked,” Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced after its successful touchdown. Lars Moravy, Tesla’s Vice President of vehicle engineering, chimed in: “Flying cars are real.”
Sharing the footage on X, set to the iconic tune “In the Air Tonight”, Musk penned: “Turns out the future does have flying cars.”
The two-seater sports car can also accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in an unprecedented time of under a second.
Interestingly, there was no driver behind the wheel during the demonstration, which Musk explained was “to make sure we don’t kill anyone”.
“Success is not guaranteed,” he warned. “I mean that. It’ll probably work, but if it doesn’t work, we’re at a safe distance.”
He confirmed the vehicle is slated to go into production in 2028. In addition to its extraordinary ‘flying’ capability, the car offers several other state-of-the-art features for drivers.
