Harry Maguire calls for Man Utd stars be braver and responds to Lisandro Martinez outburst

Harry Maguire called for his Manchester United team-mates to be braver following their 1-1 draw with Leeds at Elland Road on Sunday. The veteran centre-back also commented on Lisandro Martinez’s role at the club after his outburst against the Old Trafford board.
The Red Devils improved vastly and deservedly took the lead in the first-half, with Bryan Mbeumo netting from close range to give the visitors the lead after 35 minutes. However, Dominic Calvert-Lewin managed to snatch a point for the home side in North Yorkshire when a corner dropped his way just five minutes into the second half.
United now sit 13th in the Premier League table, having won only one of their first seven matches. The heat is also likely to be rising for Michael Carrick despite the improved performance, given the high expectations from the boardroom.

In a post-match interview with Sky Sports, Maguire hinted that the disappointing draw was ultimately down to a lack of courage. He stated: “We worked on it this week.
“We wanted to match them up without the ball and go quite aggressive. It was a bit of a five without the ball and a bit of a four with the ball.
“Fluid in midfield. We knew we could get a lot of joy in the middle of the pitch with them only playing two in there. That’s probably the area of the game where we could’ve done more.
“We could’ve been a bit braver with the ball and taken the ball under pressure. But we’re in a circumstance where we are not as brave as we should be, and we have to get that back because to win games for Man Utd we have to have that bravery and composure.”
Maguire also commented on the club’s situation with Martinez, who was openly critical of the club’s senior leadership following Tuesday’s 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.
The Argentine demanded more from director of football, Jason Wilcox, despite a largely successful summer of recruitment, while also suggesting that scrutiny should be put on those above Carrick instead of the head coach.
Discussing how this saga has unfolded throughout the week, Maguire said: “There’s been a lot of noise around the club this week – as there is every week – but more so, this week. Lisandro’s come out, he’s apologised, we’ve moved on from it.”
Despite his remarks, Martinez played for the Red Devils in their match against Leeds, but was substituted for Noussair Mazraoui at half-time due to a thigh issue.
