Roy Keane blasts Man Utd star who ‘would not do sufficient’ after Aston Villa defeat

Roy Keane criticised one player’s efforts in Manchester United’s 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa, saying he needs to “roll his sleeves up” and suggesting boss Ruben Amorim should take action

Roy Keane has criticised one Manchester United star’s commitment during their defeat away to Aston Villa.

The Red Devils legend believes Diogo Dalot’s display warrants scrutiny from Ruben Amorim and the Portuguese defender must “roll his sleeves up”. A Morgan Rogers double condemned United to a 2-1 reverse as Matheus Cunha also found the net. Amorim’s men have now managed just two victories in eight Premier League outings and are in seventh.

United’s manager received further unwelcome news with an injury to key man Bruno Fernandes, who faces a spell on the sidelines during the festive fixtures, in a crushing blow to their hopes of securing European football next season. Yet Amorim must first address what unfolded on the field, according to Keane.

The former Sunderland boss took exception to Dalot and several other players on Sunday afternoon. The Irishman was baffled they couldn’t show fight when circumstances demanded it.

Keane pinpointed Rogers’ opening strike at Villa Park as a concerning indicator. The Sky Sports analyst questioned whether United spotted the threat during the build-up, reports the Mirror.

The former United captain said: “You can have all the talent in the world. We’ve mentioned it time and time again but you’ve got to roll your sleeves up and when the game gets a bit tight there’s moments where you go, ‘I’m just going to do my bit for the team’. There’s too many players, like Dalot, that just don’t do enough.

“I won’t use the word cheating but they’re not just doing enough. And after the game I’d be looking at him – I wouldn’t be looking at other bits of the game.

“Same for the first goal when Rogers gets the ball wide. We’re all sitting there and we know there’s danger. Do they not know there’s danger?”

With Bryan Mbeumo, Amad and Noussair Mazraoui off to AFCON, Dalot said post-match that he recognises this opens up opportunities for others. Young talents Jack Fletcher and Shea Lacey both made their debuts.

Dalot shared with Sky Sports after the match: “This is the time when opportunities come for other players and you have to step up and show you deserve to be in the team and play more minutes. I think that’s how the players who get opportunities need to look at it.”
