Lancaster University scholar ‘had his future mapped out’ earlier than Xmas Day tragedy

Tom Dingle, 19, was last seen on December 13 and a body, believed to be his, was found in woodland near Dalton on Christmas Day – now his family have spoken out

The two-week search for a university student has ended in tragedy after a body was found on Christmas Day. Lancaster University students and lecturers have paid their respects to first year student Tom Dingle.

The 19-year-old was last spotted on Mill Lane, in his home village of Appley Bridge, in the early hours of December 13. After an extensive search and appeal for information, a body – believed to be Tom – was found in woodland off Lees Lane, Dalton on December 25, reports Lancs Live.

During a press conference amidst the search, Tom’s mum Susan Dingle revealed that the Lancaster University student “had all his future mapped out” but was “in a vulnerable state of mind” after suffering a loss.

She painted a picture of a “very close” family unit. “We do everything together,” she said.

Tom was part of Bowland College while studying at Lancaster University. Bowland College posted a heartfelt tribute on social media, stating: “We are deeply saddened to share that a tragic update has been provided by Lancashire Constabulary in relation to the search for the missing Bowland College first year student Tom Dingle.”

“Sadly the body of a man was discovered deceased on Christmas Day, in woodland off Lees Lane, Dalton, and while formal identification is yet to take place, the police believe it to be Tom and his family have been informed.

“His death will be a tremendous loss to friends and staff members who had the privilege to get to know him during his time at the University, and the Bowland community are with those affected by this sudden loss.

“We know that news like this can be incredibly distressing, especially during the winter break when many may feel more isolated. Please know you do not have to carry this alone.

“If you are affected by this news and need someone to talk to, support is available.”

Members of the college community paid their respects to Tom. Luisa Battista Jefferson said: “Extremely saddened to hear this, thinking of all his family and friends.”

Pendle College posted: “Our deepest condolences to all of his family and friends.”

A Lancaster University spokesperson said: “The University is deeply saddened to share the tragic update provided by the Lancashire Constabulary (Friday, December 26) in connection with the search for our missing first-year student Tom Dingle.

“Our thoughts go out particularly to his friends and family who have asked for privacy at this distressing time.”
