BBC Breakfast has kicked off 2026 with a fresh presenter shake-up.

Thursdays usually see Charlie Stayt, 63, and Naga Munchetty, 50, host the morning programme from the iconic red sofa.

But in the latest instalment Charlie was joined by broadcaster Luxmy Gopal, 32.

Nothing was mentioned at the start of the episode as Luxmy told viewers: ‘Good morning. Happy New Year and welcome to Breakfast with Charlie Stayt and Luxmy Gopal.’

Daily Mail contacted BBC for comment.

The episode also only aired between 6am and 8.50am.

BBC Breakfast is usually on air weekdays from 6am until 9am.

While Charlie and Naga present the show Thursday to Saturday, Sally Nugent and Jon Kay host Monday to Wednesday.

Naga has hit a number of headlines in recent months.

In November it was reported the BBC had assigned watchdogs to monitor Naga Munchetty after a formal investigation was launched into her behaviour.

Daily Mail contacted Naga’s representatives for comment at the time and a BBC spokesperson said at the time: ‘We do not comment on individual HR matters.’

On Sundays they have stand-in and relief presenters such as Roger Johnson, Rachel Burden, and Ben Thompson.

Luxmy joined the BBC Breakfast team in 2021 for a weekend episode.

Then by 2022 she became a regular stand-in host when the others aren’t able to present.

She previously worked as a news reporter for the Look North program.

The journalist has also hosted the BBC’s News Channel and BBC World.

Not only that, she’s also presented BBC News at One and BBC London.

It comes after BBC Breakfast fans were delighted as a beloved presenter returned to our screens earlier this week after months away – and called for a permanent comeback.

The long-running show has a regular roster of anchors, with many becoming firm fixtures over the years.

Tuesday’s (December 30) instalment saw Ben Thompson and Nina Warhurst hosting on the red sofa.

Fans were particularly happy to see Nina, 45, who left the show earlier this year to begin a new role on BBC News At One.

Writing on X, one penned: ‘SO nice to have Nina back on the sofa.

‘She’s so natural with people and a true pro. You’ve been missed – but love you on the 1300 news too.’

Another shared: ‘Good to see @NinaWarhurst back on the sofa. Bring her back full-time. #bbcbreakfast.’

A third commented: ‘Nice to see Nina for a change this morning.’

In March, Nina revealed her departure from Breakfast, having first joined the team as a freelancer in 2016.

Sharing her new colleague News At One’s editor Richard Frediani’s post about joining his team, Nina wrote: ‘Hanging up the high-viz & hairnet as I join the BBC’s News At One.

‘Our London team built a gem of a programme & it’s a privilege to be on the Salford team taking it forward.

‘(The teenaged me who lived half a mile from here & dreamed of journalism would NOT believe it).’

Richard’s tweet read: ‘Delighted to welcome Nina Warhurst as a regular presenter of the News at One from April.

‘Congratulations – a brilliant addition to the team in Salford.’

Nina’s fans rushed to X to share their love and support over the big move.

One said: ‘Congratulations but will miss you on the Breakfast show.’

Another added: ‘Such a clever, beautiful, happy young woman…..Keep it up girl.’

‘Well done Nina hard work pays off,’ a third chimed in.

A fourth added: ‘The best news,’ with four clapping emojis.

Earlier this month, Nina shared a poignant tribute while preparing herself for the first Christmas without her father.

Back in July, Nina, 45, announced that her father Chris had passed away after being diagnosed with dementia three years earlier.

Taking to Instagram, the journalist shared a reflective post accompanied by quotes and a photo of Chris.

She penned: ‘I am missing my Dad as we head to our first Christmas without him. Something is missing in the world and it hurts.’

Nina added: ‘This week I received this email from his former neighbour and it touched me deeply.

‘We didn’t know this family but the words paint a gentleman who was warm and reliable.

‘Someone who could breeze the chit-chat, but could be called on in a crisis. Someone with wisdom to offer perspective to bad luck. A good neighbour.

‘These are quiet and steady characteristics that are easily overlooked. Small gestures without fuss adding up to something much, much bigger.

‘The world can feel bleak and hopeless but quiet things we do every day hold meaning, and it’s beautiful that a stranger wanted us to know they saw them in Dad.

‘[I added here my favourite Middlemarch quote (nearly gave up on it many times, but that small passage made the slog worth it).

‘And one from Vonnegut, who I don’t know but I saved it from @lettersofnote Because the sentiment on trying every day is the same. “He was a fantastic man. ” He was.”
