Man Utd information: Kobbie Mainoo U-turn emerges as Ruben Amorim makes January switch plans clear
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has made clear his January transfer window plans as Kobbie Mainoo has reportedly made a U-turn on his Old Trafford future
Manchester United will be looking to return to winning ways when they take on old foes Leeds United on Sunday. The Red Devils have experienced a mixed bag of results over the Christmas period, managing one victory, a draw and a defeat in their previous three outings.
Following a disappointing 2-1 away loss to Aston Villa in mid-December, Ruben Amorim’s men appeared to have bounced back with a Boxing Day triumph over Newcastle, maintaining their strong festive tradition. But a 1-1 draw with rock-bottom Wolves – who secured just their third point of the campaign in the draw at Old Trafford – knocked United off course.
Leeds await on Sunday, followed by a trip to Burnley and an FA Cup third round clash with Brighton. Then comes the considerable challenge of consecutive fixtures against Manchester City and Arsenal as the Red Devils aim to climb the table.
Ahead of all that action, the Daily Star Sport brings you the latest developments from Old Trafford.
Ruben Amorim’s January transfer stance
Ruben Amorim has revealed that United have no intentions of making changes during the January transfer window. The Portuguese manager spoke before the Leeds encounter and acknowledged his squad is in a decent position – though circumstances can shift rapidly.
Amorim said: “The transfer window is not going to change. We have no conversation to have any change in the squad. There is a process, there is an idea – that is going to continue. We are near places of the Champions League but we are also near eight teams behind us.”
When questioned about any potential departures from the current United squad, the 40-year-old manager quickly dismissed the idea.
He stated: “No, none of them. I don’t expect them to come to me to ask [to leave].”
Kobbie Mainoo’s U-turn
Despite rumours suggesting an imminent departure from Old Trafford, Kobbie Mainoo is determined to make his mark at Manchester United. The academy prodigy had a stellar start to his career under Erik ten Hag, but his relationship with Amorim hasn’t been as fruitful.
The Sun reports that tensions between Mainoo’s team and Amorim were already high even before the midfielder’s half-brother sported a ‘Free Kobbie Mainoo’ T-shirt at Old Trafford in December 2025.
However, despite these issues and links to other clubs, Mainoo has made a surprising U-turn and is keen to rejuvenate his United career. Amorim has made it clear that the 20-year-old isn’t going anywhere, having stopped a loan move last summer and now confirming that he doesn’t intend to lose any players in January.
Mainoo will be hoping to secure significant playing time upon his return from injury, especially with England preparing for the World Cup in the summer. If he can work his way into Amorim’s plans during the second half of the season, he might just find a path into Thomas Tuchel’s squad.
