The Ashes LIVE: England star’s century raises an enormous query as his household get emotional within the stands

WICKET! Webster gets Brook LBW for 42

Webster reckons he has Brook LBW and he’s convinced Smith to go to a review.

There’s no bat on that, going by the vision – and that ball has turned a fair way and the tracker shows it hitting leg stump.

Brook is gone for 42 off 48 balls.

‘A lovely moment’

A very impressed Lawrence Booth writes…

After facing seven balls on 99, Jacob Bethell releases the pressure valve with four over midwicket off Beau Webster’s off-breaks and becomes the sixth England player to score his maiden first-class century in a Test match. A lovely moment for him and for his family, who are at the SCG. And what an innings!

CENTURY! Bethell gets his first Test ton!

And he brings it up by smashing Webster for four.

It sounds like every single fan at the ground is applauding this one, and deservedly so.

Bethell’s father, a former cricketer, is emotional in the stands.

It’s not just Bethell’s first Test ton, it’s the first time he’s reached the 100 mark in first-class cricket.

And for the umpteenth time today, we’re asking, why on earth did it take England so long to inject him into the line-up, especially when Ollie Pope was such a weak point?

Shock bowling change

Steve Smith has elected to rest Boland – who has been the pick of the Aussies today by a big margin – and go with Beau Webster’s offspin.

England 3-206, Bethell gets on strike

The runs have dried up for England but Harry Brook is trying to sort that with a couple of very risky attempted ramp shots to short balls from Starc. He can’t get bat on either of them as the Aussie keeps sending it down at up to 145kmh.

Bethell is just one run away from the milestone

Smith brings Starc on and Bethell takes a single to start the over.

‘This is what England should have been doing the whole time,’ says cricket star turned commentator Trent Copeland.

A single to Brook and Bethell needs just two for his 100.

Instead, he tucks it around the corner for another single – trying to run hard for two there would’ve been suicide.

Another single. England are turning the strike over almost at will.

Starc bounces him, but it’s too far outside off to be a threat. One left in the over.

And another bouncer to finish. The Aussies make him sweat.

Bethell made to wait for his ton, England 3-201

A Brook single brings up the 200 for England.

Bethell leaves one outside off stump from Scott Boland, who has given away just 27 runs going into his 15th over.

Another well-judged leave.

He drives the next one into the pitch, straight back to the bowler.

A shout goes up from the crowd as Boland’s fifth narrowly fails to gind the edge of the bat.

And a single to finish the over.

Bethel on 96 as England move 16 runs in front

Bethell pulls Neser to the boundary and a ‘catch it’ cry goes up as it flies past the fieldsman. That’s taken him to 96.

Neser screams an appeal at the umpire but Steve Smith elects not to get a DRS for a possible LBW.

England in the lead, Bethell into the 90s

Bethell just played a Boland delivery to cover, but Labuschagne’s shy at the stumps has gone for four.

England are now seven runs ahead.

England 3-177, trail by six runs

The first over back from the break passes without incident for the Lions, with Brook on 25 from 26 balls and Bethell on 81 from 134.

Neser is back after going off the field earlier.

England 3-174, trail by nine runs at tea

Lawrence Booth chimes in from the SCG…

Harry Brook rounds off a decent session for England with a flashing cover-drive for four off Beau Webster, which means England go into tea on the fourth day trailing Australia by just nine, though with one of their remaining seven wickets the injured Ben Stokes. As we’ve seen all tour, they could yet collapse in a heap after the break, but Jacob Bethell has looked the part for his unbeaten 79, and Brook may feel he owes his team a few runs after some of his dismissals on this trip.

Head into the attack, England 3-168, 50 partnership is up

Travis Head is on and has dished up some rubbish for his second delivery – short, way outside off, and blasted through cover for four by Brook.

He is getting a little turn, though. Wonder how specialist spinner Todd Murphy feels as he watches that.

A single brings up the 50-run partnership off just 47 balls, with Brook on 20 from 18 deliveries.
