Jet2 flight in mid-air emergency as ‘pilot incapacitated’ on solution to UK airport

A Jet2 flight was forced to declare an emergency on its approach to a major UK airport after signalling that one of its pilots had became incapacitated.

Flight LS980 departed Lanzarote in the Canary Islands at 3.45pm local time on Tuesday (February 3) and was progressing well on its journey to UK

However, around 25 minutes before it was scheduled to land at Manchester Airport, an emergency was was declared on board.

As it was about to descend to the airport, the flight crew transmitted a Squawk 7700, the international radio code for a general emergency.

According to Air Live, Air Traffic Control (ATC) was informed one of the pilots had suffered a sudden medical issue and was deemed no longer able to continue with their duties.

The flight, operated by an Airbus A321, had emergency services, including paramedics, on standby for the aircraft as a precaution.

The aircraft landed safely and taxied to a stand following the emergency call. The unwell pilot was reportedly met and taken for treatment by medical professionals.

Jet2 is yet to give an update on the pilot’s condition, but passengers were unaffected by the incident.
