Woman mauled to dying by her personal pet canine after tripping and falling at her Craftsman residence

A woman was mauled to death by her own dog after she tripped and fell at her North Carolina home.

Police were called to the $200,000 Craftsman property in Durham late Thursday night after the woman, who has not been publicly identified, was attacked by her pet.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, WNCN reported. Her cause of death remains under investigation.

She was taken out of the home on a stretcher, neighbors said. She is understood to live with several other women, all of whom have various pets.

Animal control removed the dog from the premises. The Durham County Sheriff’s Office Animal Services has since taken possession of it.

The dog is being held under a ten-day bite confinement. Deputies are monitoring it for signs of rabies or any other viruses.

Police have not disclosed the dog’s breed or age. It is also unclear if the pet had received any training, although locals claim it has ‘never been aggressive’.

‘It’s scary because that can happen to anyone,’ one resident told WRAL after learning of the tragedy. ‘But I have dogs myself, and that’s why I’m scared to get a big dog.’

Another said the owners would ‘let it run around in the backyard’ but claimed ‘it’s never been aggressive’.

Locals said they are shocked by the attack and saddened by the loss of their ‘generous’ neighbor.

‘It’s a loss to the community, they were just a really nice person and just so quick to help and get people the resources that they need,’ one neighbor said.

Officials say no other injuries were reported in the attack. The Daily Mail has approached Durham police for further information.
