BMW driver was racing Audi TT earlier than 89mph crash that killed mom and daughter strolling to nursery, court docket hears
A BMW driver was racing an Audi TT that ploughed into a mother and daughter and killed them as they walked to nursery, a court heard.
Jasskamal Riyat, 35, was driving a grey BMW 135i when he allegedly chose to race Hardeep Bhachu, 27, who was in a white Audi TT RS.
Justyna Hulboj, 27, was walking her four-year-old daughter to nursery when they were tragically killed in the crash. A court heard that the Audi was travelling at 89mph before it lost control, mounted the kerb and collided with the mother and daughter.
The car then smashed into a wall near a Jaguar-Land Rover garage, in Leeds, West Yorkshire, on January 16, 2023.
Bhachu, had previously admitted two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and is still on remand awaiting sentence.
Riyat has denied the same offences and is standing trial at Leeds Crown Court.
Dashcam footage from various commuters was played to the jury as well as footage found on Riyat’s phone.
He was heard to say: ‘Watch this guy. He is gone,’ and appeared to laugh as the Audi accelerated away at extreme speed.

The engine of the Audi could be heard roaring as it accelerated away.
Although Riyat did not crash his car, prosecutors said he is equally responsible, claiming the pair were ‘egging each other on’ and ‘racing at high speed’.
At one point they stopped alongside each other to speak to each other through the windows and ‘discuss the Audi’s power’
Prosecutor Carmel Pearson told the jury: ‘Just because this defendant did not crash his car, it does not mean he escapes responsibility.
‘The two men are responsible.
‘Together they drove dangerously at speed that outstripped other road users. They were jointly driving in and out traffic, breaking heavily.
‘Neither driver showed any regard for other road users or more vulnerable pedestrians.
‘They were racing and driving competitively.’
The cars began to race from Potternewton Lane roundabout, heading down towards Leeds, jurors were told.

She said the Audi was travelling at 89mph seconds before the fatal crash.
Mrs Hulboj had been walking with Lena along Scott Hall Road at around 8.30am that morning on their way to nursery.
The white Audi TT hit a kerb and lost control, mounting the pavement and hitting the mother and daughter.
The trial, which is expected to last around four days, continues.
