A Winter Olympian suffered a potentially embarrassing wardrobe malfunction – but was saved by their partner.
Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier were taking part in the rhythm section of the Ice Dance on Monday when a piece of Poirier’s clothing came loose during their performance. In a high intensity section, a piece of Poirier’s outfit was caught in Gilles’ tights.
However, Gilles acted quickly to save the Canadian duo. According to Olympic rules, if part of the outfit touched the ice then it would have resulted in the judges deducting one point, which could have seen them tumble down the standings.

The Canadian amazingly managed to catch the item of clothing and finished with an improvised pose with the material behind her back.
Canada scored 86.18 for their performance and find themselves in a podium spot ahead of the free dance section. However, if the piece of clothing had touched the ice they would have fallen to fourth in the standings.
Poirier told CBC after their routine: “We were really in the zone, feeling motivated and hungry and ready to immerse ourselves in the program.
“We had our blinders on, which allowed us to skate [in the] present.
“We came into this event unsatisfied with our performance a few days ago, and that allowed us to sharpen our focus. It was such a joy to perform today.”
France’s Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron were streets ahead of the competition, setting the bar early as they scored over 90 points.
Nobody came close to touching them until the American pairing of Madison Chock and Evan Bates took to the ice for the evening’s final performance. However, they fell one point short to claim top spot.
