Man Utd should study Marcus Rashford lesson as switch resolution ‘not an choice’
Marcus Rashford has rejuvenated his career at Barcelona after his time at Manchester United faltered – there is only one decision to be made in the summer transfer window
Leaving Manchester United used to signal the beginning of the end of a player’s career. Nothing could motivate them like the privilege of being at one of the world’s greatest clubs, right?
The names of Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani, Jesse Lingard, Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole all spring to mind. Sir Alex Ferguson used to convince himself that those who turned their backs on Old Trafford were making a big mistake. And aside from the fact it bruised his own ego, he might have been right.
But when it comes to the curious case of Marcus Rashford, nothing could be further from the truth. When asked if Rashford would ever consider going back to United once his loan move with Barcelona comes to an end in June, someone from the forward’s camp almost fell off his chair laughing.

Rashford’s career was in tatters last summer. He no longer had a future with his hometown club, following a series of bust-ups with then-manager Ruben Amorim. A group of players blocked from returning to pre-season training with the rest of the squad, until Amorim and his stars had jetted to the United States on a summer tour. Then Barca came calling – and everything changed. Rashford has been revitalised. He has learned to love the game and life again. A change of scene has resulted in a change of attitude from the 28-year-old. But this shouldn’t signal him heading back to United to see out the two seasons remaining on his £15m-a-year contract. All parties should realise that going back to the future is not an option. Rashford is better off without United, and the club is in a healthier place without him. The squad is more harmonious and balanced. The likes of Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha have helped United perform at a higher level. United should avoid the temptation of taking Rashford back – and sell him to Barcelona for the best price they can get.
