Man Utd icon responds to Jamie Carragher after his controversial tackle Sky Sports

Edwin van der Sar playfully quipped at Jamie Carragher after being left out of his top five Premier League goalkeepers list, with the Man United legend ranked sixth behind Petr Cech

Jamie Carragher was forced to eat humble pie after snubbing Edwin van der Sar from his top five Premier League goalkeepers of all time – with the Dutchman confronting him live in the Sky Sports studio.

The former Manchester United number one spent just over half a decade at Old Trafford, claiming four titles, and is considered amongst the finest shot-stoppers in top-flight history. Yet Carragher positioned him sixth in his list of all-time legends, ranking him above the likes of Ederson and David Seaman, two keepers who also secured multiple league crowns.

Van der Sar quipped when he spotted the rankings: “I thought I’d made the top five Jamie, come on!”

The ex-Liverpool defender admitted he’d been higher until a cheeky dig about his lack of a league triumph. “You were in the top five until you mentioned I hadn’t won the Premier League,” said Carragher, reports the Mirror.

“What you did at Man Utd was absolutely fantastic and I apologise, but Gary Neville said it better than me. You came in and Man Utd started winning titles again, getting to Champions League finals.”

Two additional former United shot-stoppers also appeared on the rankings with David de Gea, who was brought in to succeed Van der Sar, landing at fourth.

Peter Schmeichel, viewed by many as the greatest Premier League goalkeeper, was positioned second by Carragher. The Sky Sports pundit placed Thibaut Courtois in fifth spot, with the Belgian securing two titles during his four-year stint at Chelsea.

Alisson claimed third place, whilst former Chelsea number one Petr Cech topped the rankings. The Czech shot-stopper proved instrumental in Jose Mourinho’s early supremacy at Stamford Bridge and continues to hold some of the Premier League’s finest defensive statistics.

Carragher explained: “I couldn’t get Petr Cech’s performance in the Champions League final against Bayern Munich out of my head.

“I was in the stadium that night. He kept them in that game and won them the game. I played against him so much. You used to go into games and think ‘how are we going to score past him?’ Not just him, but that whole back four.

“It just felt like that, and he was an outstanding goalkeeping. Chelsea were a really good team and spent a lot of money, but they didn’t start winning until he came in to the club.”

Carragher’s top 10 Premier League keepers:

1. Petr Cech (Chelsea and Arsenal).

2. Peter Schmeichel (Man Utd, Man City, Aston Villa).

3. Alisson (Liverpool).

4. David De Gea (Man Utd).
