Iranian girls’s footballers: Three extra gamers change their thoughts after selecting to remain in Australia and can now head dwelling to face the regime
Three more members of the Iranian women’s football team who had sought asylum in Australia after playing here in the Asian Cup have decided to return to Iran.
Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke announced on Sunday morning that the defectors had changed their mind.
‘Overnight, three members of the Iranian Women’s Football Team made the decision to join the rest of the team on their journey back to Iran,’ Burke said in a statement.
‘After telling Australian officials they had made this decision, the players were given repeated chances to talk about their options.’
It comes after Burke revealed on Wednesday one defecting player had contacted the Iranian embassy after changing her mind and deciding to return home.
The latest development means just three Iranian team members now remain in Australia of the seven who initially sought to stay.
