Major replace after two Cardiff colleges compelled to shut over ‘security of pupils’
South Wales Police released a statement after Llanishen High School and Eastern High School in Cardiff were closed – officers said the ‘decision was not taken lightly’
Police are investigating after threats were directed at two schools forcing them to close. Officers reported receiving a “live chat making threats to harm people” at Llanishen High School and Eastern High School in Cardiff at around 8.30pm on Sunday.
South Wales Police clarified that the information suggested an individual intended to visit the schools armed with weapons, adding that currently, the information is being “actively investigated to assess the credibility and determine the origin of the threat”.
After discussions between South Wales Police and Cardiff Council, it was decided to close both schools. A statement from the police read: “This joint decision was not taken lightly but was made with the safety of pupils, staff, and the wider school communities in mind.
“At this time, there is no evidence or report of any persons attending either school posing a threat.”, reports Wales Online.
“An increased policing presence will be seen in the area whilst the investigation and searches continue.
“We understand this is causing concern for parents and the community. It is important that we fully assess the information and ensure appropriate safeguarding measures are in place.
“Further updates will be shared as soon as more information becomes available.”
A spokesperson for Cardiff Council stated: “Following the information given to South Wales Police on Sunday evening, Eastern High School and Llanishen High School have been closed as a precaution.
“The decision to close was taken following discussions between the local authority and South Wales Police, to ensure the safety of pupils, staff and the wider school community whilst the police investigate.
“We recognise that this situation will be concerning for parents and the community. Safeguarding remains our absolute priority, and we are working closely with the police and relevant partners.
“Parents have been informed directly, and further updates will be shared as soon as more information is available.”
