Thousands of pies urgently recalled after utilizing ‘world’s smelliest fruit’

A company has been forced to apologise and issue an urgent recall after their signature cream pies ended up stinking of ‘dog poo’ due to world’s smelliest fruit being accidentally added

Dog poo. Rotten egg. A sweaty gym sock.

No, that’s not a list of rejected nicknames for former Prime Minister Liz Truss, but rather some of the things compared to the absolute stench given off by the durian fruit.

Known as the world’s smelliest food, the durian is so pungent that it’s banned on public transport in Singapore where it grows, and is often used as a sort of stink bomb in practical jokes.

Measuring at around 30cm in height, the whiffy fruit is a close relative of cacao, and despite its terrible (and we mean terrible) stench, is enjoyed both as an ingredient and on its own in many culinary cultures, especially in Asia, where it is native.

But, if added in too large quantities, durian can turn even the loveliest food into essentially a biohazard, which is exactly what happened in Korea over the past few days.

According to the factory where the stinky incident took place, disaster struck when an absent-minded baker mixed a batch of melons up for a similarly sized batch of durian fruit (presumably they were short-sighted and/or had a terrible cold).

This led to a popular melon-flavoured baked good becoming, well, not melon-flavoured, and instead giving off the signature ‘poo and rotten onion’ smell of the durian.

Despite the mix-up involving such a noticeable aroma, clearly nobody in the factory had the foggiest that a mistake had been made, and the pongy pies were shipped off to shops around the country.

The mistake was eventually picked up on, presumably either when someone opened what would have been an especially stinky cream bun, or when whatever smelly food the durians were intended for was disappointingly fragrant, and an urgent recall was issued.

On social media, however, some claimed to have had the displeasure of coming across the stinky cream pie.

Korean newspaper Hankyoreh found users describing a “weird poop” smell coming from their product, while another wrote that their cat “buried it in the floor with its paws” in the same way he did going to the toilet.

The company behind the smelly pies released this statement following the recall:

“The melon-flavoured ingredient supplied to our company was, due to a mislabelling error by the flavour manufacturer, actually provided as durian flavouring rather than the melon flavour stated on the label”

“As durian flavouring is based on a melon-like profile with an added characteristic fermented odour, we failed to adequately identify the raw material during the verification process and used it.

“We feel a deep sense of responsibility toward customers who trusted and purchased our product.”
