The high-stakes transition, revealed in an official company statement, represents one of the most significant leadership changes at Apple in years – and sets the stage for what could be a defining period in the company’s future.
Cook has served as Apple’s CEO for nearly 15 years, taking the role on August 24, 2011.
Apple has had seven CEOs in its history – though that number depends slightly on whether you count interim leaders separately.
Cook took over from Steve Jobs, who returned as interim CEO in 1997, then permanent CEO until 2011.
